  1. Hey all,

    Quick background...

I formerly used Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE, until support was dropped and it could no longer receive updates for new spyware/malware definitions. I needed a good, free alternative to Ad-Aware SE, so I asked for suggestions on this forum. For reference, here is the thread I started on that topic, from 2009:

    https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/304266-Lavasoft-no-longer-supporting-Ad-Aware-SE-alternatives

After many helpful replies, I chose SuperAntiSpyware (SAS) based on all the favorable comments given in reply to my post.

Today, I notice that my SuperAntiSpyware program (ver 4.43.1000) no longer can update to the latest definitions, just like Ad-Aware SE from 3 years ago.

So it looks like it's time to re-ask the question.

I'll be uninstalling SAS (ver 4.43.1000) from my PC. Then my choices are:
    1. Just migrate to the latest SAS (free version), or
    2. Find a new (free) alternative to SAS

All I need is something that I can use to run either a quick or full scan of the PC after a session of web surfing. It doesn't need to do real-time, always-on monitoring and prevention, like S&D.

What does everyone here think I should do? Are there any free alternatives to SAS that stand out to VH members? Or is SAS still highly regarded here in 2012, as it was back in 2009? Thanks in advance for any feedback or suggestions

Good suggestion. MSE never occured to me as an option, as I thought it was only for Vista/7 only. I use XP Pro 32-bit, and I discovered (while following up on this reply) that XP 32-bit is supported by MSE.

This is why I find VH so useful for DIY PC information

  5. You need to update SAS. *NOT* the definition files, but the program itself. That's why your (obsolete) version of SAS won't update. Get the latest version.

Anyway, yeah, SpyWareBlaster, SAS, and MBAM are the ones I always use.

I use a combination of Rkill, Malwarebytes and Superantispyware. If those fail (and they have on recent malware/adware) I then use Hitman Pro.
