Hello. I am relatively new to video editing, and have encountered an issue that I simply can't figure out how to fix. I'm currently working on a video project with a long-distance friend. He is sending me video files (WMV) that he records from his laptop computer, which I then re-edit and add my part of the project. We haven't been having any problems until now, and the last batch he sent me all stutter. I can't figure out why this is happening. He's sent me files using the built-in camera and using a plug-in webcam, and one set of files plays fine, but the quality is awful and the other is stuttering, but better quality. I've tried converting them to different formats, and at different frame rates, but these aren't fixing the problems.

I asked my friend what he sees when looks at the files on his computer and he says they play fine. I'm not sure if I trust his eyes. I eventually asked him to upload the videos to YouTube to see if I could pull them off there, and they stutter on YouTube as well.

Can anyone try and offer some advice?

I think a sample directly from the wmv would be best. You can cut wmvs with asfbin and then attach the file when you post(upload files) or to a free hosting site as www.mediafire.com

Confirm you can play other youtube clips ... if issue then there's a network issue on your end.

Confirm you can play dvd's and or other video files on your system without issue ... if issue then this needs to be resolved.

If above is confirmed to be fine then onto video problem

If the video clips play fine on your friends end and what your seeing on youtube is other ask your friend to watch the clip on youtube and see if he spots the same problem.

If they spot the problem then the issue is their end ... and if not then it's your end ... most likely network congestion caused fragmentation (a device such as a cable / dsl modem is not handling the bandwidth required and choking).

You could use Baldrick's asfbin suggestion to cut the files into smaller parts and get your friend to archive the first part ... zip ... if the archive makes it through and the file extract's without showing the same symptoms then a work around has been found until the fragmentation problem on the network is resolved.

Your friends webcam is producing video with lots of dropped frames due to his computer not able to keep up with capturing.

Your friend is either a liar or an idiot, or both.
