No real favorite. I use Zoom Player for some formats because I like it's controls. MPC-HC for HD video formats. VLC for some odd formats. TMT3 for Blu-ray. Also VSO player for BDs. (I use AnyDVD for decryption.) If there's a 'perfect' player, I haven't found it.

    Hi redwudz,

Is your primary player Zoom Player instead of VLC!?!?

BTW TMT3 is $100 ... I don't have a Blu-Ray player on my laptop ... but I guess VLC or MPC-HC can not playback BR!?!?

    Thanks,

    G!

    MY favorites

    VLC for most everything.

VMP for actual BRs in conjunction with Fab Passkey... it's free.

Have used KM player before the recent improvements in VLC.

Also use WinDVD4. It's really old but it follows the DVD standard very closely... For DVDs, if it doesn't play right in Ver 4, somethings wrong with the dvds files before going any further.

It was mentioned above that pot player is an improvement over KM player... So, I downloaded it just prior to this post.

Will test it out in a few minutes so, thanks for the info on Potplayer.

VLC or MPC-HC can not playback BR unless it's been decrypted and will only play the m2ts files,no reading of the menus.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

Installed Potplayer.........Found it to be really nice.

Problem. The player is black. I like beige like VLC. Any other light color would also be fine. Are there any skins avail or any other way to change the basic color?

Maybe a TMT3 skin: http://www.mediafire.com/?av6i833sst11x2z or check in the doom9 potplayer page: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1312075

I use PowerDVD 7.3 for blu-rays...yes it still works fine for the few blu-ray I test on my computer. MPCHC and VLC for other video files.

I should probably modify the title to :

What is your best blu-ray / avchd player with menu display ?

I've tested Arcsoft TotalMedia Theatre 5 last year, yes the quality was there but so expensive for a media player.

Haaa if only MPC-HC could display blu-ray / avchd menu would be fantastic !

So probably for me use TMT5 with MPC-HC for other formats would do the trick ?

I don't use just one either.

mpchc is very good for good sources ... I mean at least DVD res with no encoding problems. PowerDVD9 is just as good, really, for DVD and BR.

But mpchc, with less than dvd quality or bad encodes, on an hd screen, is absolutely pitiless when it comes to showing flaws in the source. For not so great video you need something a little more forgiving. And decent, reasonably understandable video settings.

Unfortunately mpchc doesn't have good filter settings ... it just dumps you into hardcore video geek stuff. That's really my only criticism of it as software per se.

VLC used to be my choice for less good video. It's a lot more forgiving. But the filters, while better than mpchc's, aren't that useful either. The postprocessing filter is not enough.

The other thing with VLC is that many people think that VLC will play anything, to the point that if it won't play it the file is bad. I used to think this.

    It ain't true.

SMplayer will play videos I have properly that VLC won't. Plus the filters are somewhat intuitive and actually useful. The add noise one is great with lower bit rates on an HD screen. Why the hell doesn't everyone do this?

Another thing smplayer does that's really pretty obvious is that if you shut it down it remembers the time and other settings when you reopen the video. Again, why doesn't everyone do that either?

For audio I use Foobar, though it's a pain of a learning curve.

Actually, I'd probably use VLC for audio if they supported ASIO/Wasapi. That's a pretty stupid oversight.
