Hi,
I have a problem. I rendered my project into a few lagarith lossless files, but the aspect ratio goes to 4:3 instead of 16:9. Settings are set to widescreen but it doesn't make a difference after rendering. So since I anyway had to render into mpg, I thought that it will fix that, but no. Strange thing is that when I open those lagarith rendered files in Vegas again, it automatically recognizes them as widescreen, but KMPlayer and WMP shows 4:3. Now when I render it into a widescreen mpg, then it also plays back as so on laptop players, but not on dvd player. I checked the storage aspect ratio in KMPlayer and when I select it, then it again goes into 4:3 mode, although I rendered 16:9 from Vegas. What's going on here?

What does mediainfo say?
Some players might ignore aspect ratio in mpg files. You can also try change the aspect ratio manually in the mpg with dvdpatcher. -
Maybe try another lossless codec, Ut Video proved reliable.

The AVI container doesn't really support aspect ratio flags. It's up to individual codecs to maintain that information in their internal data (DV does this, for example) and editor/player software to extract that data. Lagarith doesn't support aspect ratio flags. So players are playing the video as if it is square pixel. Just tell Vegas your lagarith video is 16:9 rather than 4:3 after you add it to your project. I don't use Vegas but I think you right click on the video in the timeline and select the aspect ratio, or video properties.

Then the problem has nothing to do with Lagarith or your source AVI file. There's something wrong in your DVD authoring. Switching to another codec won't help.
Your MPG file should be 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL) and the display aspect ratio flag should be 16:9. The storage aspect ratio is the just the frame size, 3:2 for 720x480, 5:4 for 720x576.Last edited by jagabo; 15th Feb 2012 at 12:07.

Then either your DVD player or your TV set (or both) is set up incorrectly. If the TV is 4:3, you set the player up to output for a 4:3 set. If the TV is 16:9, you set up the player to output for a 16:9 set. The content on the DVD itself (4:3 or 16:9) has nothing to do with how the two pieces of equipment are set up.
For some TV sets you have to manually adjust them depending on whether the content being shown is 4:3 or 16:9. I hope that's not true for you.
If the IFO of your DVD shows it to be 16:9, it should play as 16:9 on a properly set up system. You can check if the IFO is correct by opening the DVD in PGCEdit, followed by right-clicking on the video in question. Then hit 'Domain Streams Attributes' and see if under 'Video' at the top, 16:9 is ticked. If not, tick 16:9 and check 'Automatic Letterbox', save it, test it, burn it to disc, and try again in your player. -
Note that the IFO file will override the aspect ratio setting in the VOB file. So if the IFO specifies 4:3 the VOB will play as 4:3 even if the AR flags in the VOB indicate 16:9. If you're not authoring, just trying to play an MPG file from a data DVD -- many DVD players will not respect the AR flags in MPG files.
