Okay, I upgraded to Windows 7 (shouldn't have ever done it) and now can't get video off my Sony HDR-HC1 camera. Tried using Windows Media Player, Camtasia and others. Looked to updated drivers, but Sony site says no drivers available.

    Now what?

I hope I can still use this camera and get the video on my PC to edit.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

neither hdv nor mini-dv needs a camera driver for win7. for hdv tapes try hdvsplit, install in non /program files directory and change properties to run as admin. for mini-dv tapes use windv - same way as hdvsplit.

    Thanks!

    I hope it works.

Not sure what you mean by...

    "properties to run as admin"

Just tried it and it did not detect the camera. Figured out the "properties to run as admin".

A popup for HDV Split for 0.77 Beta is there, but it looks static. When I turn on camera, it does not capture. Nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

turn on cam, put in play mode, make sure transport section is in export hdv not minidv and tape is likewise hdv. start hdvsplit, plug firewire cable. wait a minute and cam should show up as connected. if not push play on the cam and see if it shows up.

if nothing try minidv output with windv.

if still nothing the firewire port/cable/firewire cam output is not working.

Did just like you and still no go.

Is there another way to get this video on my PC? This is VERY frustrating.

can the hc1 play back and send miniDV over firewire like canon's can? if so there is a menu selection to either play out HDV or miniDV over firewire. you need to make sure it's set to HDV out.

here's a screenshot of an HDV with hdvsplit. all that's required is the cam on play and plugged in to the firewire port and this shows up. nothing else was ever installed.

maybe re-install your firewire chipset driver. or buy an add-in firewire card.

Is this setting on the camera itself? This "menu selection"?

Did you have the Sony HDR-HC1 transferring with a different OS? If so you should know the camcorder settings. How were you capturing HDV before? WinXP or Vista?

HDV cams can output in 1440x1080i HDV or 720x480i DV format from a tape recorded HDV. DV recorded tape only outputs as DV.

    Use HDVsplit for HDV mode.

    Use WinDV for DV mode.

Using same PC, but had Vista at the time. I stupidly upgraded to Windows 7, and should never have done it.

I am currently shooting in 720 I think. As you can see, I'm not a techy, so a lot of this is over my head.

When I try to use WinDV it says, error, no video device found.

Is there any other way to get the footage off the camera and onto my PC?

"720" isn't an option. As Aedipuss showed the camcorder format selection is "DV" (720x480i) or "HDV" (1440x1080i).

OK I think I get it. What is your computer model and how did you upgrade it? Did you wipe the drive first?

A fresh install requires you add all the hardware drivers from the computer manufacturer's support site. You may be missing the driver for the IEEE-1394 port.

As I said, I'm not a techy, so many of the terms are not familiar.

Where on the camera do I check this setting? This all worked before I upgraded to Windows 7, and I have not changed any settings on the camera.

    It's an HP Pavilion

Also, I have a newer Exilim camera that works perfectly on this PC. I can upload video to windows movie maker, camtasia, etc...

when you play back a tape i suspect the camera displays what type of video it is, either 1080i or 480i. what you called 720 is probably 480(720x480) which is miniDV not HDV and you need to capture using winDV not HDVsplit.

check your computer hardware listing to make sure the firewire port is installed and working. right click "my computer" select properties, click on device manager. see how your ieee1394 port is listed.

I am trying WinDV and it is not recognizing my camera. When I turn camera on the WinDV does nothing.

Yes, the firewire port looks correct

    This is such a bummer.

You think it's the firewire? It works perfect on the same computer with my Exilim camera.

Try the camcorder on a different computer to verify the Firewire port is still functional.

    I'm thinking you didn't fully install Win7.

go to the hp website and download then install the win7 32 or 64bit chipset drivers. then you can go into the device manager and remove the iee1394 controller. re-boot and win7 will find it as a new device and re-install the driver. hopefully a working one.

if not and you really want to use that cam, buy a firewire add-in card.
