Hi guys
I am having problems opening certain internet pages. It;s driving me mad.Luckily it can open this site, so there is def a connection.
- Eg. Trying to open Gmail...says it is taking to long to open then flips to 'Internet Explorer cant display this page'
- Wont open Ebay - 'Internet Explorer cant display this page'
- Trying to download a free small app on itunes - msg 'Network connection timed out'
- Facebook - opens but only shows first top half of screen
- Will not open any utube - 'Internet Explorer cant display this page'
So far I have:I am lost as to what to do next. Any ideas??
- Turned off my computer, left for 20mins, turned back on
- Same with modem (as above) and reset it
- The connection on my husbands wireless laptop works perfectly
- My internet connection says it is connected
- I have run several Trend full scans
- Run Windows Defender scan
- I have reset my security & privacy settings to the default
Could it be something as simple like a setting that is wrong??

Hiya, thanks for the link I have gone through the list doing what I can.
Under Fix 1: I have found '
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost
these I shouldnt have
I have got to
Fix 3: Clear DNS Cache – The DNS cache keeps a record of sites that you have recently visited on your computer. If that gets corrupted, you may have issues opening sites that were previously accessible without problems.
Type cmd /k ipconfig /displaydns in the Run window to see the cache entries. If that unreachable website is listed in the cache, type cmd /k ipconfig /flushdns to clear the cache.
I have done this but it comes back saying 'the requested operation requires elevation' what does that mean? What's my next step. -
You may have entries in your HOSTS file under 127.0.0.1. This does not mean that they should not be there. Only if these specific websites that you can not access are listed should you edit this file.
You running Vista?. Run your system as Administrator to cancel that 'elevation' message' -
Hiya
I have Type cmd /k ipconfig /displaydns in the Run window to see the cache entries, non of the entries are web sites Im having problems with. So am back to square one
Frustrating as I have internet connection to certain sites...thank gosh, this one. But not to certain others.
If I do have malware/spyware, Trend is not picking it up. The connection on my computer is also intermittant, however my husbands wireless connection works perfectly, so its not the connection. -
Stating the obvious I know but is your husband's conenction connected through your router. In other words you both use exactly the same connection.
If yes and he has no issues accessing these sites, the problem is local to your PC.
I would flush the DNS regardless of there not being any of the listed websites there. If there is malware in your system that should affect all operations and not just specific sites.
How is your PC connected to the router? I suppose it is possible, you do say your connection is intermittant, that a driver is pulling down your system but, again, that really should affect all sites.
But what I have found when I did not got access to some sites or some were slow loading, simply turning of the router, wait a minute, and turn it back on, usually cured that. -
Hiya DB83
Yes, exactly the same connection...so its my computer.
Thanks for your post. Someone on the Geeks forum is convinced I have malware (even thou I have Trend), maybe thinking he is right.
My computer is wireless. Yep have done all the turning off, leaving for a while, putting it back on. Yeh Im miffed, some sites are OK like this one and yahoo is OK, fine even, others part work (eg on Facebook only displays the top half of the page.) (Other sites are presented distorted, linear and links are just words that are underlined).
The last time I downloaded something, took about 10mins but I had to 'resume' about 10 times.
I'll try and give the DNS flush a go. -

Maybe I miss something here.
You had the message before but still maged to get the cmd prompt working ??
Now you say you can not run as administrator and still get the message ??
How to set (temporarily) as Administrator:

Hi DB83
Thought I would let you know that I have resolved my internet probs as discussed in this post. I have been on another forum, major geeks.com (hope I am allowed to put that), all help is great.
I did heaps of things advised. Then I changed my internet browser from Internet Explorer to Safari and YEY it feels like I have a new computer. All internet issues solved. All except ITunes, where I still cannot download apps, am still working on that.
Plus my internet is running so much quicker.
Just thought I'd let you know.
Although, it is all good (touch wood) I have been advised to run some other malware stuff, from that forum, because something must have caused all the problems with IE, which I will do.
Thanks for your input -
While I am glad to read that you appear to have solved your problem - with one caveat inasmuch that itunes is still out-of-bounds - and that a real solution should cover that as well, this does not really help anyone reading this topic.
A real solution would be to continue to use IE. Now IE is notorious for security issues but I would have thought that was covered by the regular updates from MS. You do run regular updates do you ?
But if the issue was with IE - you do not give any detail of all the other things suggested to you or whether they did have any effect - then the problem was probably to do with a plug-in. If all was well before and the problems just started out of the blue then you unwitingly installed a plug-in which pulled down your system. So the real solution would be to identify that plug-in (could even be installed by some other software) and remove it.
And again, any browser issues should affect ALL websites not just a few.
