Default is set to 40, but would it improve quality putting it to 100 or would it make it worse? Or is it not even worth turning on? Cheers guys

Depends on the source. 99.9% of the time it's fine at default. Not worth turning it off

Try it and find out. Impossible to answer in generic terms. The question is too vague. It depends on the source, the encoding settings, situation, bitrate curve for that particular source.
If you are on the lower end of the curve, it might place more IDR frames, lowering average quality where it could have placed a P frame. But on the other hand it might improve quality in other cases where you have sufficient bitrate. Other cases it might not affect at all, or imperceptible change in quality, only metrics
