  1. Hi,

I just brought the HP DVD100i today, with a view to making DVDs that could be read/viewed on my Playstation 2. I was unaware that the DVD100i did not support DVD-R, but used this new DVD-RW technology instead.

Does anyone know if the DVD100i's RW disks can be read in a Playstation 2? Or can a Playstation 2 only read DVD-Rs ?

Is there any software that can be got to make the DVD100i use DVD-Rs?

Also does the DVD100i (or any other DVD-R or DVD-RW writer) allow you to make back-up copies of Movie DVDs ?

    Many Thanks,

    Chris

note that there are two differenst dvdr standards, the dvd-r/dvd-rw and the dvd+r/dvd+rw. The hp dvd100i can ONLY burn on dvd+rw, no dvd+r nor dvd-r/dvd-rw.

  3. Hi,

Thanks for the advice, do you know if Sony Playstation 2 can read DVD+RW DVDs or can it only read DVD-Rs?

    Many Thanks,

  4. PS2 will not read DVD+RW disks. You will have better luck with DVD-R and +R. Make sure you use quality media to burn since the DVD drive they use in the PS2 is a low grade drive with so-so readability.

  5. Which DVD-Rs would you recommend?

Also what would be a good (reliable) DVD-R Writer to get at a reasonable price (ie less than $500 / £400) ?

    Many thanks,

  6. I recently bought a PS2 imported from Japan PAL model. It played my home made video recorded with HP100i on DVD+RW. :P

  7. Which media did you use and did you have to change the drive compatibilty bit settings to get it to work? Not much luck it getting it to work on my end.

  8. The Pioneer A04 can be had in the UK for 300UKP so I would guess it's around the 300$ mark in the States.

My 18 month old UK Playstation2 will play DVD-R and -RW discs if the audio is encoded as PCM. It will NOT play MPEG audio at all so my discs created with SpruceUp, VideoWave and Videostudio play silent. MyDVD encodes to PCM so they work but PCM is uncompressed and takes up oodles of space. This of course, also means my PS2 will not play VCD discs. It may be that Sony recognised DVD burning was to become popular so quietly added the required MPEG audio circuitry to newer players.

Incidently, the PS2 seems more comfortable playing DVD-R if the player is lying flat rather than upright in it's stand.

I tried a DVD+RW disc created by a friend on his Philips stand alone recorder and the PS2 wouldn't recognise it but again, newer models may well do so.
