Hi,
Until now I've been unsuccessfull in extracting the forced subtitles from the Sherlock Holmes (2009) blu-ray. In a few scenes a character called Dredger and Sherlock Holmes talk French. These scenes are subtitled in English when "No Subtitles" was selected in the subtitles menu.
I've been able extract SUP files using HdBrStreamExtractor. Unfortunately opening both English subtitles (or any other language for that matter) BDSup2Sub doesn't reveal any forced subtitles (as opposed to extracting the forced subtitles for the Na'vi spoken parts in Avatar).
I can't use the English subtitles that I DID manage to extract, because they contain only "[Speaking French]" or something simular in these scenes.
Can anyone help me get this to work and tell me how to extract the forced subtitles from Sherlock Holmes?
Thanks in advance.

When opening the *.m2ts files that contain the scenes where French is spoken, I get the following message:
Some tracks not recognized. This tracks was ignored, File name: "C:\TEMP\SHERLOCK_HOLMES\BDMV\STREAMS\00166.m2 ts".
When I click OK, tsMuxer opens the file and I'm able to view and Demux any subtitle track that is presented. However, none of them are the forced subtitles I'm looking for. I verified their presence by opening and playing the file with VLC, where I'm able to display the forced English subs.
By the way, I get the same error message in tsMuxer when I open another *.m2ts file that is part of the main movie. I suspect this to be caused by the same forced subtitle track, which doesn't display any subs at that point in the movie because no non-English language is spoken, but the track is present in the stream all the same. Other *.m2ts files that are not part of the main movie (extra's) open in tsMuxer without error message.
Any clue?Last edited by vtpeters; 7th Feb 2012 at 17:39. Reason: Typo

Sounds to me that the subs are contained within a .SUP file.
Imagine a series of transparent GIF's (frames) with text on.
It will be one of the .m2ts files. Unfortunately, tsMuxer doesn't do .SUP.
This will need to be converted through (OCR) subtitling software (google .sup to .srt).
It might be easier to make a .srt file by hand and add it to the tsMuxer remux folder. -
I'm not sure, bt I believe that *.sup is the standard format for subtitles on blu-ray's. Both HdBrStrwamExtractor and tsMuxer show *.sup as their standard output format for subtitles.
Only tsMuxer is the only one of the two tools mentioned that reports an error message when opening the *.m2ts file for extraction.
I have gone through the whole process of extracting the English forced subtitles in Avatar (displayed only during the Na'vi spoken parts), so I know how to convert the image based *.sup files (through OCR) to text based *.srt subtitle files.
It's just that I can't seem to find the right subtitle stream within the *.m2ts, though I can make it visible when playing the *.m2ts file in VLC ... -
Ah, I see. Sorry didn't interpret your post properly. Thought you meant extract them to another format.
I personally do it another way and convert to MKV, extract main movie, sound track and sub file and remux to TS main movie only (then compress to HD xvid) for use on a media player. This doesn't help your case as the files are renamed. -
Well, the actual problem is to find and extract the desired subtitle stream to whatever format, so I may convert them to *.srt (maybe edit them a little) and mux it with the main movie to create a movie-only blu-ray disc.
I think I have found them (they're inside the main movie *.m2ts files, VLC seems te be able to put them on screen), but haven't found a way yet to extract them to *.sup, *.sub or *.srt. -
I don't know if this will help but better try than do nothing.
BD-Demuxer-Professional
It's a 14-day trial and supports folder input. -
Thanks for the tip, but I don't think it's the answer to my problem. Besides, it's way too expensive for me.
The output format isn't the problem here, it's the fact that tsMuxer or any other tool I know isn't able to 'see' the forced subtitles in the main movie stream.
Are there any other tools I could use to see if they work? -
To demonstrate my 'challange' I'm adding a screen shot of a scene from the movie:
You can see in this screen shot of an *.m2ts file playing in VLC that there are 23 subtitle streams present in the movie. No active subtitle has been selected ("Deactiveren", which is Dutch for de-activate), but the 'forced' English subtitles are shown.
Is there no-one out there who has an idea or suggestion?
Otherwise I'll have to make the subs by hand to get this to work.
Thanks in advance.Last edited by vtpeters; 8th Sep 2012 at 17:46. Reason: Typo

OK, I think I got it figured out.
In the first scene at approx. 48 minutes into the movie the French speaking character Dredger is introduced and he says a small (obviously) unimportant line that is not subtitled in any of the available languages. At 52 minutes in a scene at a shipyard Holmes and Dredger have a conversation while they're fighting each other. When some non-English subtitle is choosen in this scene, both the English and the choosen language are displayed (English at the bottom of the screen, the specified language at the top of the screen).
Given the screen shot shown in my previous post I think I made the mistake in assuming that this relative new blu-ray title would make use of overlay graphics to display the English translation when French is spoken. But instead it seems that the Engilsh subtitles for the French spoken parts are hard coded into the video stream.
I'm sorry for all the confusion I may have caused.
