Ok...I have learned how to use the awesome AVISynth and do great IVTC...and I am just starting to think about how this is going to affect my bitrates...I am encoding a 124 min. movie (Empire Strikes Back) and I have a question. It would be nice to get the film onto two CDs...the bitrate calculator on this site says I can fit 124 min. on two CDs with an average bitrate of 1554 kb/s, which is obviously too low. But since I have gone down from 29.97 to 24.976 I figure this gives me %20 more bitrate...which works out to 1865 kb/s. Is this acceptable for SVCD? Can CCE with 4 passes make an 1865 average look good? Is my logic here completely wrong? Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated...

Yes your logic is correct. A progressive 23.976 encoded file should theoretically look as good as the same interlaced 29.97 encoded encoded with %20 more bitrate.

Personally I do not think those bitrate levels are acceptable at the standard svcd resolution but thats just my opinion. If you use a resolution of 352x480 instead the quality should be alot better and at this resolution you will be creating a CVD which is backward compatible with svcd players so you shouldnt have any compatibility problems.

The best answer I can give you is to just try it and see if the quality is acceptable to you.
