    I just purchased my first digital camera that has HD video. Is there a really good truly freeware program to convert mov to avi?

    What's you goal with the avi? Edit in a software? Play in media player/dvd player, etc.

    Maybe mp4camtoavi or mpeg streamclip.

    If you want a standard dvd try AVStoDVD.
