I have a few mpeg files here, and I am curious if there is a way to find out the bitrate of the file. I am sure there has to be something simple I am simply overlooking.

Just open it in Virtual Dub and go to:
file...file information

Virtual Dub doesn't open mpg2! Use Bitrate Viever instead (link @ tools section)
