Solveigmm avi trimmer is easy and free. If it fails use avidemux(click on it for guides).

in line wirh baldrick's reply, VirtualDub, VirtualDubMod (which requires few VFW codes installed) and AVIDemux will cut and trim AVI in direct stream copy mode.
