  1. I am trying to process 2 or more basketball games. I need to cut the 90 minutes game in to play by play which means the game will have about 180 clips. For 2 games that means about 360 plays. i need to have them organized so that I have each separate clip in a way that i can move around to make a montage but also to be able to name the clip so that i can find it among the huge number of clips (duration 25 seconds max).
i tried to do this with pinnacle and though i can cut the clips with the razor tool i cannot rename them. The only way to do this is capturing the video with an external device connected to a dvd player, but this is to slow a process so i need to work internally.
Anyone can suggest a software that can do this or a method of work? Thanks in advance to anyone that takes the time to read this and answer.

Premiere Pro or Vegas Pro have capture utilities that support in/out marks with sequential clip naming. You build up a capture log then have actual clips captured automatically. Consult the downloadable manuals.

I'd bet there are capture programs targeted to sports logging.

Any major NLE can do this (AVID MC, Apple FCP, Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, etc). Probably your Pinnacle can do it too. You don't say WHICH pinnacle app or version you're using, though. Look in the manual for something like "subclips" or "trimming", "regions", "logging"...
(wouldn't necessarily use a "razor" tool for it, as that's usually only for working on the timeline)

  4. Sports programs are too expensive (around 3000 a year) but they are just perfect for this (video tags and database combination). A friend of mine how is a pro has shown one to me. I am not a pro so i can't have such budget. I will try sony Vegas though. I don't have Mac so i can use only windows and Linux. I have used Pinnacle studio 12 so far. Also a solution was to use 3 different progs. A ripper to convert a dvd to avi, Virtual Dub to use the save avi segment function and then pinnacle for the montage. I am looking for a better way though

Vegas has a free demo either Movie Studio or Pro.

Check the manual for capture options. The capture program isn't very intuitive but can be used to do what you want. Essentially you log a series of in/out points with a naming convention then the actual capture is implemented automatically. This assumes a controlled camcorder like DV or HDV. You can also manually capture the slow way.

  6. When you talk about capture you mean to import via external device? I am looking to skip any extra hardware and work directly off my laptop.

    What is your video source?

I'm talking about standard DV or HDV camcorder capture over IEEE-1394 Firewire. It all works fine if your laptop has Firewire.

If you already have the video on the hard drive then you are setting in/out points on the timeline and manually naming and exporting the files.

  8. I want to use a dvd and rip it in to a file or a video file. My question is witch software would allow me have some sort of organization on my clips like having separate clips on a folder or any other kind of organization so that i don't have to run up and down the timeline looking for a needle in the haystack, which is to find a clip named 10 let’s say in a video that is sub-clipped in to 180 clips. Is that doable?

    A strange way to proceed.

How was the DVD made? A DVD will be poor quality video vs the original camcorder file.

Your first problem with DVD is to get it on the timeline. After you have a timeline you need to set in and out points and export to files that you name.

With programs like Vegas you can set named markers at in points then search to that marker (e.g. 1st quarter, time). The markers can be converted to chapters in DVD Author if DVD output is the goal.

  10. The DVD will be a game of my opponent, so it may be any kind of quality and i will not have the camcorder to get the video from. The video file will be in whatever format or quality i can get my hands on! quality is not the issue. i will want to get lets say all the clips of a specific play the other team runs or lets say of their key player going left, and make a montage to show may players what the other team is doing. getting the DVD in to the timeline will probably need to rip the DVD in to a video file (any suggestions on the format settings?) and then to import it. In pinnacle this is not required. It has an option to import from my DVD ROM directly.
I am going to check out Adobe premiere on a friends of mine computer. Vegas did not look like the thing after spending a couple of hours on it. I Guess i will keep working on it.
Thanks again for all your time and help guys this will really make a deference in my work if i make it!

Here's how to simply do it in Vegas (which you must not have looked too hard!):
    1. Extract/rip your dvd to a single mpeg file (i like dvddecrypter for this) of the entire game
    2. Import the file into Vegas
    3. Open in Trimmer
    4. Find you area and make your selection
    5. Click the [Create Subclip] button, name it and click [OK]
    6. Move to the next area of selection and repeat #4,5,6
    Done!

Other apps work basically the same way (with slightly different jargon)...

  12. What were your specific objections/dislikes about the way vegas handles subclips and organization ?

That last example would probably take ~3 hours (1 per minute). The only way this could be sped up would be if you were doing the taping and were logging in realtime and then used your log to run the tape capture (which could include the naming). That or some Artificial Intelligence Clip separator ($$$$).

I am a bit new on Video editors to honest, but I can't find a sub-clip button anywhere on Vegas (Vegas movie studio platinum 9.0). I did find however the way to organize with bins ect. I worked on Adobe premiere and I think that is just the think i need. After i mark in and out (i got to even customize my shortcuts to make my work even easier) i sub clip just by right clicking and name the clip although this in not necessary because it numbers it automatic. I just need to work a bit more to learn the montage part of it. If Vegas can do the exact same thing it would be better since i already have it and i don't need to buy adobe. I ma nearly there !!! Thanks for all the help!
