I'm in the process of converting many of my DVD series box sets to h264 MKV. No problem there. Also changing the names of many of the files generated and no problem there as well.[Lots of software to do that]
However, I would also like to renumber many of the MKVs. All disks begin with the #1for the first episode in that folder.. So for a six disk series I have six folders and each of these folders have half a dozen or so episodes beginning with #1. I have manually converted these to fit in one folder with the #s ranging from #01 to 25. It's time consuming to do this manually so I was wondering if anyone knew of a numbering program that would renumber the half dozen folder files for me.
For example. All the files have the same sequence xxxNN.xxx. So what I need is a numbering program that would look at the 4th and 5th digits and convert them in sequence to #s that I specified that they begin with and leave everything alone.
Tony.

I have used this once or twice. Was helpful for what i needed it for. Took me a while to get my head around it but the link gives you a guide.

I've tried that program previously but couldn't find a way to for it to generate successive #s for all the files in the folder automatically.
Will try it again.

I 2nd Bulk Rename Utility! It can seem a little overwhelming at first but it's an amazing piece of software.

Thank you for the info.
I did use Bulk utility earlier in the day and also found out that it would work even though as mentioned above it is a bit confusing to begin with. With it I was able to assign new numbers just before the .file type and then to use the remove function to remove the old numbers.
Another program that I just downloaded is Rename 4U. Seems like it has a separate window for performing re-numbering functions. Looks like it could also work but I haven't had the time to try it out yet.
Anyway thanks for the help. A google search for re-naming programs lists an awful lot of them. Re-numberers not so many. Cnet listed 7 and of those only rename4U seemed to be of any use.

Just a short note to update my previous post. Along with Bulk rename utility. Rename 4U also works.
It is quick and easy.
Still it would be nice to find a simple program that would work as I described in my initial post.

I've run the 1-4-a rename to do something quite similar to this before, and it is a little complex (mainly 'cuz it has so many good options), but can do the job you're asking.
