Divx/Xvid in AVI, or x264 in MKV or MP4, will give you much better quality at the same file size.

Watch the two attached videos full screen. Which would you prefer to watch?
The 2nd one (mkv) is better quality of course however the 1988 mpeg1 codec is not far behind imo. It is a scale of mkv is 10/10 and vcd is 9/10 for what the age of codec is, size and quality and factor in all the facts, however yes thank you for taking the time to post that example, of course mkv is better.

I used to work for Catco and we made 3 versions of The Transformers : The Movie (1986) in 2001 to 2002 when we had the Hasbro/Marvel distribution/pressing agreement for a short time for the Asian VCD market. We were sent a D-Theater machine and copied tape of the master film and asked to copy, press and distribute onto vcd (2 disc at first) via 2 methods for the Southeast Asia Region. 1 of the VCDs is known (using the s-video out of D-Theater unit and s-video in of Terapin vcd recorder, (both "home units") but we made 2 others from pc (capture cards), the last is a bit of an edited version that fits on 1 vcd. They said it was impossible to get a high bitrate at an hour and 8 minutes and get it on 1 working vcd for playback on home units and pc, but with a Windows 98SE computer and TMPGEnc I did it...which gave me the nickname "VCD King" around the office. 2 were legally released, however we could not legally press the 3rd version (one I made by myself). But I had it on vcd since 2002 and for the time and even now looks good. Maybe I'll post it somewhere one day so you guys can watch. I watched it on my smartphone recently, and smiled once again 16 years after I first did it =)
