    Maybe it's processing, but just not showing a progress percentage...

    Normally, an AVI file has an index in it (somewhere at the end of the file, if I remember correctly).
    A 'broken' or incomplete AVI could miss this index.
    Often this index can be re-created from the content that is there, so that further processing can commence after the indexing is done.
    I think mencoder is just telling that it is re-building such an index.
    Perhaps it will show a progress percentage once it starts the actual conversion, sometime later?
