  1. I have heaps of MPG files that I want to convert to a format that can be played from a USB key on my Xbox 360. I think Xbox only understands MP4 and WMV.

What's the fastest and best way to convert them? Does it need CUDA to be fastest?

    Thanks.

Batch convert overnight with freemake video converter or xmedia recode or handbrake. Use the xbox 360 profiles.

I've tried Freemake in the past and the end result was an out of sync video where the voices were delayed in the video.

BY the way, whenever I used HB, the output file ends in .m4v, a format my Xbox360 does not recognise

    Which convertor keeps the sync?

    Rename to mp4.

Give more info about your mpg files if you want more details.

    Yes I agree.

If these are mpeg2 mpg files you might consider taking the time to author and burn to dvd. Then you just pop them in as dvds on disc and don't worry about it.

Chances are they aren't vcd mpeg1 mpgs but you could make vcds out of them too.

Lots of people will tell you the xbox 360 is not an ideal media player for digital files. Its true it has limitations.

You would probably be better off investing in an external harddrive and a media player like a wdtv or roku box that plays digitial files off harddrives. They take lots and lots of different formats and most if not all of the newer models do read ntfs harddrives (the wdtv gen 1 does by the way if you wanted to buy used).

The 360 can also do xvid/divx (but it might not like every xvid/divx you have in your collection - I believe I've read its picky about what it will accept - all the different settings you can do to make xvids/divx files and all) but I've read reports on this website that it doesn't like super high bitrates and there is the file size restriction of fat32 harddrives. Though you can use mac hfs+ format on a drive to get around it. But apparently one other forum member mentioned the 360 only likes wmv that are over 4gbs. I can't personally confirm that.

These are some options to consider.

But plenty of freeware programs to do your conversions if you stick with the 360. Format factory and multiavchd are two to look into.

IOW, Xbox360 is piss-poor as a general media player. (I mean, REALLY, what kind of media player can't do MPG?!!!)

I'd suggest not wasting your time on conversion, and just get a WDTV or similar M.P. that does have good general media support.

    Whats WDTV or MP?

  8. WDTV = stand-alone media player ('Google is your friend'!)
M.P. = Media Player (generic term for ANY stand-alone media player which connects/transmits to your TV)

    Or you could try this:
