  1. Is there any program that you can use to edit the blu ray and only keep what you think is necessary? For example, if you have a blu ray movie 30GB and want it to fit on a BD-25, you would like to get rid of some audio tracks and extra material to save 5gb, but you would like to keep the original menus as well as original quality of the movie . I know this was possible on dvd movies, but is it for blu rays?

  2. Sort of like a VobBlanker for Blu-Ray? No, not yet. Or if there is, not free.

But you *can* de-select unwanted audio tracks and subtitles with BDRB. Some movie will then fit if you do that. You can also set BDRB to re-encode the audio from DTS-MA or TrueHD to AC3 640 kbs; many more movies will then fit a BDR.

Or use Clown_BD BD Copier to keep main movie and top menu only. Been awhile since I used it, I forget if you can re-encode the audio at the same time within that program.

I almost invariably do movie-only (except for episode discs) and re-encode the audio, and perhaps half or more movies will then fit on a BDR. Really though, for those movies that do require a re-encode, BDR size is ample. Yes, a lossy re-encode always degrades the video, but I doubt it would be noticeable to you (I personally can't tell just by watching). BDRB will do the job nicely.

    Good luck.

BDRB allows you to blank unwanted video. you have to add the following line to the config file:

    ENABLE_TEST=1

so you can blank unwanted extras, trailers, etc. while keeping everything else (including menus in full backup mode).

  5. Here's the post in which jdobbs introduced/explained that option:

    http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1526277&postcount=12911

Mind you, the author warns menus may not be identified accurately 100% of the time. When it's sufficiently stable and accurate, I suppose it will not be a hidden option any more.

If what you want is movie and menu with no extras, you may find Clown_BD BD Copier is easier. Have a look at this thread for a few pointers on how to use it:

i've used BDRB's blanking feature many times without issue. it is a rare occurrence (one that i never came across) that BDRB gets the menu wrong (and has been addressed in the latest releases).

and clown_bd BD copier doesn't help you at all if the movie is larger than 23.2 GB. BDRB will compress the movie so that it fits on a BD-R.

IMO, BDRB is the best choice out there. multiAVCHD is 2nd but doesn't handle seamless branching and isn't supported by the author anymore (otherwise it would be right at the top with BDRB).

BDRB is supported very well by jdobbs.

  7. Well, it might be a little difficult to come to grips with if you're new to it, especially if you're a newbie. (Dunno how much experience the OP has.) Such as figuring out that the entry for ENABLE_TEST=1 must come before the [paths] in the INI or no go. (Which jdobbs fails to mention, although it's elementary and not surprising).

OTOH, Clown_BD BD Copier isn't a one-click without thinking deal either, so...

At any rate, neither is quite as flexible as VobBlanker, which can re-insert edited titlesets into a DVD structure. For that one needs BDEdit, a difficult program to learn.

  8. I have downloaded both BD rebuilder and Clown_BD BD Copier and is trying them out.

For example BD rebuilder report main movie 29,5GB. Is this with all audio track included? Can I see the size of the different audio tracks?

Fritzi93 mentioned that Clown_BD BD Copier only back up main movie. When I try it, it looks like you can keep what ever you want. Any one know about this?

I said no such thing, read it again. Clown_BD BD Copier can keep menu and main movie, I can confirm that much. It looks like it's possible to selectively blank items as well, but I haven't tested that. Now that I'm thinking about it, maybe I'll give selective blanking a try.

Yes, when I read it again I see I misunderstand what you wrote, sorry. How good is the programs to figure out the menu of the movie? If I select movie+menu only in the two program they seems to pick different number of files?

  12. I tried to back up a blu ray keeping only main movie + menu's.

First I tried BD rebuilder choosing BD-25 as size. The process took 12 hours(i3 3,3GHZ, 4GB ram)!? The result was a 15GB unplayble ISO, the ISO load with Power DVD, but stops after "loading blu-ray". Shouldnīt it be an mkv file after the reencoding? And why only 15GB and unplayable?

Tried the same with Clown_BD BD Copier, but without reencoding. It ends up with a 31GB unplayable ISO. Do I have to use tsMuxeR or something here to make it playable?
    Quote Quote
  13. Did you mount the ISO image on a virtual drive first? (Like VirtualCloneDrive). Just asking to be sure, so don't be offended.

Anyway, I suspect PowerDVD is your problem. IIRC, a couple versions back they removed the ability to play ripped BDs. In fact, DVDFabPasskey had what they called a "PowerDVD workaround" option. Latest versions of Passkey say remove PowerDVD virtual drive detected error message or something like that.

BTW, PDVD is a steaming pile. I have a few install discs, and last halfway usable version is 7, IMO. You could try TMT, which is better in every way. Yeah, it's pricey.

    Good luck.

[EDIT] Oh, forgot to add, default output is BD, you must select an alternate output if you want MKV, etc.

  14. Yes I mount in VirtualCloneDrive, so Power DVD may be the problem if itīs not the file it self that is messed up. I will try to burn it on a BR-RE and see if my PS3 plays it.

The option in BD Rebuilder is Auto-burn to disc or write to ISO file. I donīt follow here, will the ISO be a MKV or what?

  15. I tired to burn the ISO file I got from BD_Rebuilder, but it didnīt work now either. Donīt play in my PS3, so the file most have been messed. I guess this happens if BD_Rebuilder canīt sort out which files that really hold the menus? Any idé how to solve this problem if I want to keep menu?

Since your burning on BD25 your encode times can be cut in half(almost) by using BDRB's High Speed BD25 option. Why are making ISO's?

Because my PS3 donīt play MKV so I have to stream it in that case. Have to go for ISO if it should be playable from disc.

Even if I go with MKV it wouldnīt solve the problem i described above...

Yeah, with enough patience to master it. One of the most difficult programs to learn that I can think of though. That's why I didn't mention it before.

Even using the edit feature in BDRB is going to be tough for a newbie. Here's a tip: It's helpful to use BDinfo to identify the length of the *.m2ts file in each playlist file. (Extras are hardly ever split into multiple *.m2ts files, though sometimes main movie will be). Open *.mpls files with MPCHC to preview.

I have been following this thread since the start and i have a couple of things to say/ask that might enlighten others searching and reading this......

Only in "movie only" mode, not in full disc with menu's, which kind of sucks.

What exactly does the "High-Speed Option (BD-25)" do ?

I looked at the FAQ and a little on the official Jdobbs website/forum and i did not see any explanation of it.

I have done several full BD backups to BD-25, with menu's and extras, minus trailers and any other garbage i want to get rid of,
And i have used the "Highest (Very Slow)" setting to get two pass encoding, but time is not a concern for me as i just set up a batch encode at night and it runs all night and the next day while i am at work, and i get 2 BD backups done by the time i get home at 5:15pm.

I have added the command to the config file to allow manual blanking of "trailers, extras" and it seem's to work great for all the BD backups i have done, 15 so far.

I also did a few quick searches here and i really never seemed to find a definitive answer.....

Is one encoder better than the other ?

    x264 or FFMPEG ?

In BD Rebuilder i have always used the x264 and i can see no difference between the original BD and the BD-25 in full disc mode.

  21. I really don't know either. It doesn't do an analysis pass, and the encoding pass is very fast indeed. The assumption being BD25 will provide space for ample bitrate without heavy calculations to allocate every last bit to best advantage.

My guess is, if the size reduction needed is, say, 10%, it just allocates bitrate based on 90% of the source at any given point.

Well the majority of my backups have been full disc which were 40+ GB's, i did a couple of "movie only" backups which were only 25-31 GB's for the movie only.

I did the faster re-encode for movie only but for full disc's i did the slower 2 pass high quality.

Which makes me think of another question but i am assuming it is the same as a dvd.

I have been doing the ALIEN box set, which each disc has the "original theatrical release & the Directors cut", but i am guessing they don't have both entire versions on them but some kind of branching ?
    Quote Quote
  23. You could verify that with BDinfo. I'd bet on each playlist referencing substantially the same m2ts files, with a few alternate files and/or additions.

Since I almost always do movie-only (except for episode discs), I use BD25 High-Speed Option. Oftentimes movie-only will fit without a re-encode though, especially if you convert the audio to AC3.

  24. I really donīt get how to pick the right files to get movie+menu. BD Rebuilder allways pick wrong files if you choose Movie&menus. If you preview you see that it pick some extras in this mode and where are the menu hiding? I Canīt find it in any of VID_xxxxx. I also tried BDInfo, but it donīt help to sort out the menu?

In Clown_BD BD you canīt preview the contents so there is really no way to know in which files the menu hiding?

Farscape1 you seems to do movie+menu backups. How do you succed to find which files content the menue?
    Quote Quote
  25. You're finding out that you've really jumped in with both feet.

I suspected that, as a novice, it might be a bit frustrating for you.

Again, I maintain Clown_BD BD Copier will be a little easier. It *does* have a preview function. As distinct from Clown_BD. (You do know you can preview in BDRB by right-clicking a file, right?)

The thing with BDinfo is to see the length of the video in a playlist file. Length gives valuable clues: longest=main feature, very short=warning screens, a little longer=main menu, longer still=extra. Usually.

  26. The problem with BD_Rebuilder is that the menu canīt be found in any of the files. Have done preview on all files. And the program itself mark the extras as menu if you let the program pick. Any clue?

I could preview the menu in Clown_BD BD Copier so hopfully that will help to get me a working backup. Could you deselect unwanted Audio in Clown_BD BD Copier or was that only possible in BD_Rebuilder? Is it possible to find out the size of the different audio streams?

Any way thank you for try help me out. Have been running DVDs all these years so blu ray is kind of new, but I will hopefully get there...
