  1. Greetings!

I am having trouble finding a YT dowloader that will both allow me to choose a destination drive for the download, and Q up multiple videos. So far, the best I could find was DownloadHelper 4.9.5 that works with Firefox, but it has some problems. As I am downloading MP4s, the choices I get in the download menu are either an unspecified resolution, or one called “medium” which is meaningless. I have so far been unable to get answers about this from the help forums provided. Additionally, they don’t make it easy to Q up the videos. The downloader need not be specifically aimed at YouTube. I would be happy with stand alone software.

It seems in the end that we get what we pay for, so I am happy to pay money if I have to, if I can find one that can do all these things well: Q up, choose destinations, and give me clear resolution options. I am all the more willing to pay for it if it is part of a larger editing or movie making package, which I need to get anyway.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you!

    Daniel

PS: there is a sticky thread on this subject, but some of the links are out of date.

StreamTransport is free and can give you a destination choice. It will also let you choose which resolution you grab, but I don't know about queueing things up. It grabs the video in real time as it plays. You may have to play with a little bit to get it to work though. In my opinion the interface is a little klunky but once you figure out how to use it, it works very well.

DownloadHelper used to be good but now I'd file under "better than nothing" category as it won't work at all with a good number of YouTube videos since they made some major changes to try to prevent users from downloading videos some time ago.

  3. jdownloader can download videos from youtube. just copy the video link and the linkgrabber will show all the possible files that you can download: mp4, flv, even some audio files. You can download multiple at a time and also set where you want the downloads to go. i only download youtube videos every now and then so i cant really comment on compatibility with all videos, but i've personally never had a problem with it

If you don't mind installing another player, Real Player had downloaded every video I've tried. It has no provision for custom resolutions but will let you assign a destination. You don't have to paste the web address. Simply click on the "Download this Video" tab at the top right of the video. Works well.

For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".

There aren't too many YT videos that I try to get, but I can't recall a case of being unable to when I did go to grab one. Still using one or another of these: Orbit (older version), YouseableTubefix script for Greasemonkey in FireFox, another one that competes directly with YTF but I can't recall the name just now and it's on a laptop that only gets occasional use, and once in awhile the Coojah / Blader duo. All of these are free, and I use them for most other online sources, not just YT. Sometimes the video stream will turn up in my cache -- albeit with an obscure name -- and then I can track it down and save it with the CacheViewer FF add-on. I'm a bit surprised that I don't run into the very-hard-to-grab RTMP ones much more often than seems to be the case. If I did, I suppose I'd have to get comfortable with RTMP Explorer.

Firefox with DownloadHelper - set OPTIONS in Firefox to set where your downloaded files should go. I created a folder cleverly called "Downloads".

  11. Thank you all for your input. I am grateful that you took your time to help me out.

To hech54: The problem with firefox downloadhelper is that it gives me two options for MP4 downloads resolution: something called medium, and an unlabelled resolution option. In other words, I’m copying an unknown resolution, and I can’t find answers to this in the help forum.

To turk690: I don’t understand what you mean.

To rwmol: I had RealPlayer, but uninstalled it. I found it problematic in a number of ways. It does not allow me to choose a resolution, which is important to me, and it also slows down my system. It is a very aggressive piece of software.

Jagabo: the YT link you gave takes me to an Outer Limits episode.

Wallet, jman98, Seeker47, and Des I will definitely try out your suggestions!

Again thank you all for taking the time, best wishes,

    Daniel

I'm an avid YouTube uploader. My early YouTube uploads were only small FLV files. A smart downloader would only show you what is available.....meaning that if I never uploaded that file in anything other than a crappy little 8MB FLV file...then that is all that is available. In many cases there simply is no other video quality available. There is no way to magically get a high quality video if the original was a low quality upload. There are too many variables involved.

Some Comments on Downloaders, for YT or otherwise:

The YouseableTubeFix script for Greasemonkey in FF (sort of an add-on to an add-on) is supposed to do this also. My use of it has been limited, but it seems to work. YTF is updated several times a year.

The one I could not recall in post #8 above is actually another Greasemonkey script, AIO Downloader. It claims that it is better than YTF, but I haven't really tried it out as yet and so cannot comment on this.

I still have the old 2.8.1.4. version of Orbit Downloader installed -- which still works for a lot of things, in my experience -- because I did not like some program behavioral changes they instituted after that point. You can probably still find this older version either here, at AfterDawn (if they are still around), or elsewhere on the web.

Many have complained that the Coojah / Blader duo is rather obtuse, and that is pretty fair comment. (But it has worked for me, on more than a few occasions.) That said, I found earlier versions of DownloadHelper to be unclear, unintuitive, and not terribly useful either, despite having printed out some guide materials for it. But that's just me. It is still installed here, and has been regularly updated on my system, so I should probably give it another go.

From what I've read in several threads here, for the difficult RTMP stuff, you pretty much need either GetFLV (payware), or, now that RTMPDump has been updated, RTMPExplorer. Other freeware programs (StreamTransport ?) use RTMPDump also however, so it would be nice if they would get things up to date.

It is likely that this is because you need to update your version, which you said was version 4.9.5. The latest version is 4.9.8. I was using 4.9.7 last night with no problems. I did have to wait a bit for it to detect ALL the versions.

Another choice I have is to click on the links that are generated by a Greasemonkey script I am using. YouTube HD Suite 3.5.1 adds a set of links to the pages on MOST YouTube pages. However I find I prefer the way DownLoadHelper handles the naming. You can set the download folder in the options under the download tab.
