Playing a Blu Ray disc in a PC is a pretty simple process. Buy a Blu Ray drive and pop the disc in...your graphics card does the rest. That got me to thinking. What kind of GPU/graphics chip do set top or home Blu Ray players use?

  2. Most probably use RealTek or Sigma chipsets these days.

That being said, why don't those companies make video cards? Seems like if they're in a lot of Blu Ray players (and we know you need decent specs in a PC to playback BR)..you would think they would be popping up in the video card market.

For the same reason for all practical purposes nobody competes with Intel and AMD - the costs to do so are staggering. It's not trivial to make video cards. With all their money Intel has been doing it for years and as long as they've been making them everybody has considered their offerings to be vastly inferior to those of AMD (via ATI) and NVidia. If Intel can't get any respect in the field, what chance realistically would Sigma and RealTek have?

  5. Note that Sigma and RealTek specialize in playing media files, not 3d rendering like ATI/AMD and Nvidia. Playing video is just an afterthought for them.
