  1. I left my computer on last night, I was using the Freemake Video Downloader to download some files off of YouTube, my Tmpgenc Xpress 4.0 was shrinking some mpeg2 files to .divx files and I went to bed. I wake up this morning to chaos on my computer. I click on a desktop icon and the wrong program opens, I click on another icon and that same program launches. I go and try to play a file and the wrong file plays.

I just completed a Norton Scan and it didn't find anything. Now the computer is working normal. I don't know what to think.

I checked my History log on my Norton Anti Virus and there was an attempt that was blocked by Norton at 3:04am. There is also a notation that a registry security key was set.

Things seem to be back to normal. But I might uninstall the Freemake Video Downloader.

  2. I just did another complete scan and everything seems to be fine. This scan went a lot faster and whatever bug seems to be gone. I usually shut my modem off at night, I think I will go back to that practice. I am also going to wary of this Freemake Video Downloader for awhile.

  3. Scan in safe mode. Even better if you can: remove the drive and scan it in another computer. Use a router with a firewall and you don't have to worry about intrusions.

  4. I tried to go into Safe Mode, but with this HP Computer it seems to be a different technique than what I am used to, or maybe it is because this is a Windows 7 computer.

Even before this incident, I have foibles with this computer at times. The problems I usually run across is when I am transferring files from my Windows XP computer to this one. I have to make sure that I don't do much when the transfer process starts, not until I see how many minutes it is going to take to transfer, if I wait things are usually fine, if I don't wait I end up with files that are corrupt and this causes Windows Explorer to behave peculiar until that corrupt file is deleted.

  5. Hit F8 while booting to enter Safe Mode. This works for XP, Vista and Windows 7.
They that give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty or safety.

Something's seriously wrong with your computer. You should address that first.
