  1. Hi, this is my first post on the board.
I have no great experience in DVD authoring, but thanks to some of your guides I managed to get good results.

Now, I hope you can help me solve a minor problem on a DVD muxing.
I added the italian audio track to a original DVD, keeping menus and extras. I used the MuxMan, VobBlanker and PgcEdit softwares.

But to explain what's the problem, first I must describe the structure of original DVD.

This is a movie DVD with two audio tracks: 1) original english audio and 2) the audio commentary by director.
The main menu of the DVD consists of the following items:

    - Play the movie
    - Chapters
    - Commentary
    - Trailers
    - Documentary 1
    - Documentary 2

The Chapters, Commentary and Documentaries items refer to another submenu. The important point to note is that the submenu of "Commentary" is structured as an index of the movie chapters (similar to scenes selection submenu of "Chapters"). So you can navigate from one scene to another, listening to the audio commentary by director.
Also, there are two options of choice through the player's remote control: you can return to the main menu of the DVD, or you can return to the different Extra submenus (depending to the video being played).

If you watch the movie with the commentary audio track and, by the remote control, you are going back to the reference menu, you get to the submenu of "Commentary". Instead, if you are watching the movie with the main english audio track, and you want to return to its reference menu, you get to the submenu of "Chapters".
This is the normal operation of the DVD.

My muxed DVD works fine, also with the new added italian audio track, that is selectable by the player's remote control (I tested the playback and navigation with PowerDVD and Windows Media Player). But when I watch the movie with the italian audio track and I go back to the reference menu (not to the DVD main menu, that choice is ok) I get to the submenu of "Commentary".
This is the problem. I wish the italian audio track works as the main english audio track, returning to the submenu of "Chapters".

I think it's possible to correct the issue, maybe even using PgcEdit? But I have no knowledge of advanced functions of PgcEdit, so if someone was kind enough to explain me the procedure step by step, would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

PgcEdit will do, but to help we need more info. For starters, post a picture of Title commands and track number of Italian language. If you are lucky that migt be enough.

  3. Hi tinker, these are two screenshots about the PGC/VTS of the movie and the Stream attributes.

Regarding the audio tracks, now there are three streams: 1) the default english audio, 2) the english
audio commentary, that is the second track, and 3) the new italian audio, that I have set as third
    track.

But for more detailed information, look at my attached zip file, which contains several txt files
generated by PgcEdit (DVD Commands, Menu Buttons Commands, PGC Movie Info, PGCs List, Streams Info).

    Thanks for your time.

If you go to PgcEdit and make a Backup with some VOB, I can use a trace to check it. It is much easier than files you sent.
Got to File/Backups/Create ZIP backup once you click Save other Window will open asking to include small VOB's (button will be highlighted), do that and post that file. You may have to use a File Sharing site, but see how big it is.
Commands for Title do not show what I was looking for, it may be in VMG Pgc11. But once I have a Backup file I can see what is going on.

Where is a language menu for selecting languages?
I just ran it as a DVD and it looks like it returns to a root menu after play, even if I salect it from chapters.

  7. There is no submenu for languages in the original DVD.
The main menu is what you see, with the items "Play the movie", "Chapters", "Commentary", "Trailers", "A British Horror Film", "Grand Ecran". It's the root menu.

In the original DVD the language audio is only the English (the default audio), so the only other track is the audio commentary that is activated when you select "ON" from the submenu of "Commentary".

With the backup files that I have passed, you see only how to navigate through the menus, but not the movie. So, if you select one of the scenes from Chapters (or from Commentary), it back to the main menu.
Instead, in the original DVD if you select one of the scenes (from the Chapters index or from the Commentary index), it plays the movie at the specified point.

Really, with these backup files I don't know how we can understand the reference of the audio tracks, because there are no audio tracks! (I played with VLC media player).

I just got your second file. There is a lots of steps in between before it gets back to a menu. I cannot use PowerDVD to test, because there is no video, it jumps right back to a Root menu. I have to use Trace in PgcEdit and change a language as it go through Title play.
This is what I came up with.
Insert those three commands in VTS1 LU6.
Let me know how it worked. It worked in my trace.
I'll be gone for couple days so it may be a while before I reply

  9. I've inserted the three commands according your instructions, but unfortunately it seems that there is no change, and still the italian audio referenced to submenu of "Commentary".

Let me once again clarify the operations' sequence with more precision:

    1) when you watch the movie with the default english audio or with the italian audio (selected by remote control) and you return to menu, in any case the DVD returns to main menu. It's ok.

    2) when you go to "Commentary" and you select a scene, so playing the movie at a specific point, or by remote control you select the second audio track, then the audio is the english commentary and when you return to menu, in any case you return to the submenu of "Commentary". It's ok.

    3) when you go to "Chapters" and you select a scene, so playing the movie at a specific point, then if the audio remains in english and you return to menu, you get to the submenu of "Chapters" (It's ok), but if you select the italian audio (by remote control) and you return to menu, you get to the submenu of "Commentary", that is wrong.

You can verify this by running the DVD with PowerDVD, so I send you a private message providing links to download all what you need.

I hope that you will find the key to the problem.

You cannot trust those software players all the way. They are not 100% DVD compliant.

If you want to slpit DVD look at the picture.
In this case make two Folders File1, File2.
Copy all which is in box File1 to FILE1 folder, same for File2.
You can make as many folders as you want. Than they can be combined to original one folder.
    That is for next time.
You have my other reply in private box.

  11. Hi tinker, you said that on your DVD player, "after selecting Italian language and pressing ROOT Menu button it comes back to ROOT menu, as it should".
Ok, but if you press the other menu button (what I called the reference menu), it comes back to menu of "Chapters" as I would like?
On remote control of my Toshiba DVD player there are two menu buttons: "Menu" that corresponds to the root menu, and "Top Menu" that corresponds to the reference menu, such as the menu of "Commentary" if you're watching the movie with the audio commentary by director. (These buttons, in PowerDVD, are called respectively "Titles Menu" and "Main Menu", and the issue happens when after selecting italian language you press the "Main Menu").

Since this is a DVD9, my final project is burn it onto a dual layer disc (with ImgBurn software, identifying the correct layer break). So, only for testing on my Toshiba DVD player, I prefer compress it and burn on single layer disc rather than split it as you suggest.

But now there is another problem.
I modified the DVD adding the same command line for a 4:3 aspect ratio in VTS8 LU5, as you reminded me through pm (see image below).

During DVD playback, selecting the Italian language and trying to get back to menus (the root menu or the other), the DVD freezes with both PowerDVD and Windows Media Player.
I knew those software players are not 100% compliant or reliable, but in this case the DVD stops working. So, I think there's something to do and fix in the VTS commands, before burning/testing on my DVD player.
    You can still help me?

You did not mention Title (Top Menu) button. That one go to VMG domain Title menu, it usually start DVD play. I will take a look at it from that side. In the DVD I think they refer to a Top Menu as Main (Root) menu, but I will check that and let you know. DVD player's remount control TITLE MENU button will go to Title menu in VMG, MENU button will go to a Root menu of DVD, that is usually the menu from which you can select Play, Chapters, Bonus and so on.
To burn a single layer you cannot split DVD the way I showed you in the picture, it will not work. This is only if you want to send a file to sharing site where size is limited.
To make a fit to DVD5 you can use a VobBlanker to hide few cells in the title to make the file a smaller size, but if you prefer compression, that is fine.
In your case it will be OK if you burn Part01.rar file you sent me, it looks like everything is there. That is the file I burned with modifications to test on DVD player.
If you want to return to a Chapter menu after language change, just change numb of GPRM(0) to 2.
    If GPRM(6)== 2 than GPRM(0) = 2

    P.S.
This is a few hours later. I just played burned DVD and no matter what I do, that is in any language and any submenu, if I press Title button on my remount during play, it will return to Main ROOT menu of DVD. This is usually the way DVDs are authored. If I choose Italian during Commentary, I just get Italian language played, no commentary, still if press TITLE button, get back to ROOT (main)menu of DVD.
This is the same behavior if I run "Trace" in PgcEdit.
Please burn the DVD and let me know what is going on at your end.

In the first post of thread, I had written: "there are two options of choice through the player's remote control: you can return to the main menu of the DVD, or you can return to the different Extra submenus (depending to the video being played)."

I did not say the name of these two options because it can be different from one type of player and another. Anyway, I was referring to "Menu Titles" and "Main Menu" buttons.

Also, I have written: "but when I watch the movie with the italian audio track and I go back to the reference menu (not to the DVD main menu, that choice is ok) I get to the submenu of 'Commentary'. This is the problem. I wish the italian audio track works as the main english audio track, returning to the submenu of 'Chapters'."

According to your instructions, I added the commands lines in VTS1 LU6 (for 16:9) and in VTS8 LU5 (for 4:3). Then, I changed number of GPRM(0) to 2.
But nothing has changed from before. The issue remains.
Not only that. I had to delete commands in VTS8 LU5 (for 4:3), returning to the "NOP", because the DVD freezes.

To burn a single layer you cannot split DVD the way I showed you in the picture,

Yes, in fact it seemed strange to me. I knew the way to split with VobBlanker, from this guide.

I just played burned DVD and no matter what I do, that is in any language and
any submenu, if I press Title button on my remount during play, it will return
to Main ROOT menu of DVD. This is usually the way DVDs are authored. If I choose
Italian during Commentary, I just get Italian language played, no commentary,
still if press TITLE button, get back to ROOT (main)menu of DVD.
Look at what I described above, in the post number # 9. This is what happens to me with PowerDVD. It's not a problem of a language (commentary) instead of another (italian), but of a menu (Commentary) instead of another (Chapters) when navigating from the italian language selected.

I have yet to try burning the DVD, but until today, with other DVDs, what happened with PowerDVD has always happened with my Toshiba player too.

  14. This morning I burned the DVD and tested on my Toshiba player.
Unfortunately, it happens what I feared. The DVD works EXACTLY how it works with PowerDVD.

Just I had reversed the functionality of the names buttons. On Toshiba remote control, when I press the "Top Menu" button it returns to the root menu, in any language and any submenu. But when navigating from "Chapters" (or "Commentary") and you go to the movie, selecting the Italian language and you press the "Menu" button, always it returns to the "Commentary" submenu.
I have to think that the commands entered in VTS1 LU6 through PgcEdit doesn't have any effect.

Also, I found another strange problem. I tested both on 16:9 TV and on 4:3 TV.
On my 4:3 TV the display format of the movie is not normal, that is as you see in this picture (it's not a screenshot but my simulation using Photoshop):

  15. This is my solution to the chapters menu problem. (Based on the files you have uploaded at rapidshare.)

    In VTSM 4, LU 1 (en), 18 (dummy), the pre-command 49 is:
    Code:
    [00 F1 00 0B 00 01 00 36]  49  if ( gprm(11) < 1 ) then { Goto line 54 }
    Change it to:
    Code:
    [00 B1 00 0B 00 01 00 36]  49  if ( gprm(11) != 1 ) then { Goto line 54 }
(You just need to change the < comparison operator to != )
Then copy that command to the clipboard.

Select the next PGC (VTSM 4, LU 1, 19). That PGC has exactly the same structure than the previous one. Again, modify the pre-command 49. It is easier to just select it and click the "Paste Replace" button.
Repeat the same operation in VTSM 4, PGCs 20 to 41. (Yes, there are 24 PGCs to modify in total!)

Explanation: When the line 49 in these PGCs is executed, gprm(11) contains the audio track number that has been selected during the playback of the main movie. Line 49 checks if that number is less than 1 (1 is the commentary), and if it's the case, it jumps to the chapter menu. Otherwise, it jumps to the commentary menu. Since you have added your new audio track after the commentary, and since the test assumes that all tracks greater or equal to 1 are the commentary, the jump is wrong when the Italian language has been selected. By changing the test, it jumps to the commentary only if gprm(11) contains 1, and to the chapter menu in all other cases.
Unfortunately, it is necessary to edit a lot of PGCs, because there is one PGC per chapter, and there are two sets of PGCs (one for the 16:9 menu, and one for the 4:3 menu).

BTW, Polanski's Repulsion is one of my favourite movies!
Pity you don't have the original French audio track, and Italian subtitles, but it's another story.

  16. Hum, I haven't tested my method with the 4:3 menu, but unfortunately, it doesn't work. (It works fine if you have configured your player for 16:9).

Anyway, fixing the problem for the 4:3 menu is similar. In VTSM 4, LU 1, PGCs 18 to 41, change the "<" to "!=" also in pre-command 40:
    Code:
    [00 B1 00 0B 00 01 00 2D]  40  if ( gprm(11) != 1 ) then { Goto line 45 }
Note that the target of the Goto is line 45 instead of line 54 like in my previous post, so you cannot simply paste the line you have copied previously. You must manually change the line in PGC 18, and paste it in PGCs 19 to 41.

If you prefer to have the Italian audio track selected by default when you insert the DVD, you can also change the pre-command 3 in VTSM 1, LU 1, 16 to:
    Code:
    [71 00 00 0B 00 02 00 00] 3 Set gprm(11) =(mov) 2
Similarly, if you want to reset the audio track to Italian when you turn off the commentary with the first commentary menu, change the pre-command 1 of VTSM 1, LU 1, 32 to:
    Code:
    [51 00 00 82 00 00 00 00] 1 (SetSTN) Set Audio track = 2
And repeat the same operation in VTSM 8, LU 1, 22, to change also the 4:3 menu.

Trick: You can copy the lines I have posted in the forum (be sure to include at least the [ and ] characters as well as the hex numbers between them when you copy the line), and paste them directly with PgcEdit. That way, you don't have to manually edit the commands.

Not sure why this happens. Since I don't have the VOBs, I can't test how the movie is displayed here, but I note that it is correctly flagged as 16:9 in the IFOs. But it's a NTSC DVD, and if you live in Italy, chance are that your 4:3 TV is PAL and doesn't handle the NTSC material correctly. The DVD player may also be responsible of the problem, although it's less probable. There is nothing you can do, except buy the Italian (or French) version of the DVD, in PAL, or buy a new TV (or player).

Yes, it's also one of my favorites
In truth, this is the first Polanski's movie filmed in England, so the original language is English...
I wanted to create also italian subtitles for the movie and for the extras documentaries, but it's a job very long and tiring.

You're right, but as far as far as I know, there are two "original" audio tracks. Catherine Deneuve and Yvonne Furneaux (her sister in the film) have played in French, and have been re-recorded later in studio in English for the original UK version. The French audio track I have on my DVD has therefore been recorded (partially) before the English one, and can be considered as the original. The movie has been co-produced by the UK and France.

Anyway, it's not a problem. The movie is good in English too (especially since there are very few spoken words). Have fun watching it, in the language you prefer.

Maybe it can be derived from a remuxing issue with VobBlanker? Because I noticed that the number of files in the VIDEO_TS folder of the original DVD is 41, while in the folder of my final DVD Mux processed by VobBlanker the files are 40.
It was deleted a 114 kb sizes file, named VIDEO_TS.VOB.

If it can be useful, I have attached the log file of VobBlanker.

  21. No, VobBlanker did its work correctly. In fact, in this case, VIDEO_TS.VOB is a dummy file, not referenced by the IFOs. The dummy file is a trick sometimes used in commercial DVDs to reserve some space at the beginning of the DVD and align the layer break correctly. But you really don't need that file if you burn the DVD with a good burner like ImgBurn, as it will create the gap automatically if needed. And anyway, if you shrink a DVD-9 to fit on a DVD-5, the dummy file will consume much space for no reason, so it is better to remove it anyway. (BTW, if you use PgcEdit's Remove Useless Stuff, it will remove it too.)

Anyway, VIDEO_TS.VOB is a menu VOB, and is not related to the display problem of the main movie.

Do you have the same problem when playing another 16:9 part of the DVD, such as the menu, or, even better, another NTSC 16:9 DVD? If it's the case, that confirms that the problem is probably related to an incompatibility of your hardware with the NTSC standard.

You're right! I tried another original DVD NTSC and I found that it has the same display problem. So, the cause is my 4:3 TV. Thanks for giving me this doubt resolved.

  24. r0lZ, your solution for Italian audio related to "Chapters" works! Thank you very much.
There is only another small issue.
When you go in "Commentary" and you select the "ON" option and watch the movie listening the audio commentary, then if you select the italian language (by remote control) and return to "Menu", still you return to "Commentary" submenu (not "Chapters" submenu).
Similarly, if you watch the movie with the audio commentary track and return to "Menu", then if you select "OFF" option and play the movie, when you select Italian language and return to "Menu", still you return to "Commentary" submenu.

I know this adjustment of navigation never seems to end, but I ask you a bit of patience.

Yes, it's truth, this is the operation even with the English audio track. However, it would be preferable to change.

Do you really want to change that? If you need it, please wait. I can't do it
    today...
Yes, if you don't mind doing it, thanks. Take your time as you want, of course.

  27. OK. I'm not sure that will be easy, as here, the whole navigation must be analysed to understand how it works, and your DVD is very complex. But I'll have a look tomorrow.

    Thanks for your donation!

It been a pleasure, and don't worry if you cannot make this final change. You have already done a lot.

  29. OK, I had some free time, so I've searched how to do what you want. It's not easy, but the solution I propose should work. Anyway, try it.

Insert the following commands at the beginning of the pre-commands of VTSM 4, LU 1, 1 (dummy) RootM:
    Code:
    [00 B1 00 0C 00 03 00 05]   1  if ( gprm(12) != 3 ) then { Goto line 5 }
    [61 00 00 00 00 81 00 00] 2 Set gprm(0) =(mov) sprm(1:Audio track number)
    [71 B0 00 0C 00 01 00 01]   3  if ( gprm(0) != 1 ) then { Set gprm(12) =(mov) 1 }
    [71 00 00 00 00 00 00 00] 4 Set gprm(0) =(mov) 0
    [00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00] 5 NOP
(Again, it is easier to copy the 5 commands above in the clipboard, then select the pre-command 1 of the PGC, and click Paste Before.)

Now, when you go to the commentary menu to enable or disable the commentary, then you change the audio track and press the Root Menu button when the movie is playing, it returns to the main menu.

However, if you go to the Index menu (the chapters in commentary mode) after having enabled the commentary, then you select a chapter and press the Menu button when the title is playing, it returns directly to the Index menu, as before. (That was the difficult part to understand.)

I hope it's what you want.

  30. Hi r0lZ, I thank you, I was going to write that I changed my mind about the last question. If the original DVD works that way also with the English audio track, there is no reason to do other work. Sorry, do not waste time, that's okay already for me.

    Have a good day.
