converting HD mov to smaller size

Hello.

I'm trying to convert some HD video taped with a EOS 5D into something
smaller, for istance liek 640x480 or similar.
I have been trying to manually set up the destination size, encoding (tryed MPEG4 both Dvix and MOV)
and destination format (Avi).
The result is a smaller video full of grey blinks which basically make useless the video.
Can someone help me with the right settings to do this.
