cannot see or extract audio from AVI

Hello.
I have some captured AVI files and they play back fine in WMP, but when I open them in Vegas 10 for or in Audition CS5.5 for editing then there's no audio. I also tried SUPER converter to extract the audio, but it comes out shrunken, like 20 minutes shorter high pitch audio file. I guess it could be stretched out in Audition and pitched back to normal, but that's a headache. Is there some other way to get the audio track?
