  1. I've just added the Bit Rate column to an XP Explorer folder. Seemed a potentially convenient way of displaying it while I experiment with various conversions. But it doesn't seem to make sense. For the test file in my screenshot it shows 705 kbps (0.7 Mbps) instead of around 40 Mbps reported by VirtualDub, MediaInfo and VLC.

I tried several other AVI files from various sources, with similar results.

It probably just looks at the header. I don't think AVI reports bit rate in the header.

On my DV-AVI files it seems to look only at PCM audio. Reports 1536 Kbps.

Same on uncompressed 4:2:2 avi, it just sees PCM or AC3 audio rates.

Same on mp4. It ignores all h.264 video.

    It ignores MKV containers.

  3. Thanks. On balance, looks pretty useless then!

  4. On my computers Windows (XP and 7) is reporting the audio bitrate.

  5. Thanks jagabo. OK, if that's consistent then I suppose it is useful. Pity there's no video BR option though.

BTW, is there a direct relationship between audio bit rate (705.6 kbps) and audio sampling rate (44.1 KHz)? If I add the latter as another column, it's blank for those same AVIs.

Win7 has a "total bitrate" column. Or right click on a file, select Properties, then select the Details tab.

Not directly. But like frame rate in videos, the higher the sampling rate the higher the bitrate you need to maintain quality.
