but most codec packs dont have wm3 codec also have seen a lot more codecs which these codec packs don't have plus I use VLC all the time
-
Specifically, which other codecs do you need?
Codec packs almost always include ffdshow, which can handle a great variety of codecs.
Or you can just install that by itself.

WMV is included with Windows and Windows Media player can open it.
If it doesn't work, open the file with Mediainfo, put it in view/text mode, copy the info this post,
and somebody will advise you further.

well when I 1st glanced at the config to check I must have mis-read that line, but how am I suppose to bring up the ffdshow config screen again as cant see where in ffdshow folder you do this

ffdshow includes all the WMV codecs. Start -> All Programs -> ffdshow -> Video Decoder Configuration:
If your version is so old that it doesn't include WMV3 you should update.
-
well i downloaded ffdshow from here so isnt that latest one then also I dont have wmv3, also where do you get update
-
...and if it say's "disabled", you can re-enable it.
However, you shouldn't have to even do that. Rarely have I seen ANY copy of Windows that didn't have installed support for WMV3 right out of the box...
I'm thinking there's something else wrong.
Use MEDIAINFO!

I have mediainfo it also says the movie is wmv3 video but it dont play as no codec how do you enable it anyway
-
Just play the video with WMP. It will automatically download the WMV3 codec if necessary.
If you are running 64 bit Windows: 64 players require 64 bit codecs, 32 bit players require 32 bit codecs.Last edited by jagabo; 28th Nov 2011 at 12:08.

even tried it in wmp but says same thing you need codec to play it.
-
Are you sure you scrolled down the codec list in ffdshow looking for WMV3? It's about 1/3 the way down from the top.
-
Maybe your wmp got corrupted? On win xp, you can download and install wmp11

if you look above you will see I have uploaded 4 snapshots of ffdshow config pages

I think davexnet nailed it. He's download a screener of Happ Feet 2 and can't figure out how to 'unlock' it. Poor bastard... I really feel for him ...
Have a good one,

Again, if you're using 64 bit Windows: 64 bit programs require 64 bit codecs, 32 bit programs require 32 bit codecs.
In addition there are two different video subsystems in each of those: VFW and DirectShow. Editors tend to use VFW, media players DirectShow. ffdshow as both VFW and DirectShow decoders. You should enable the appropriate decoders in both, and in both 32 bit and 64 bit ffdshow.
