Hi folks,
I am working on a project where I have some videos where I need to do some editing INSIDE the video. I'm capturing the video as AVI, and each file is about 12GIG in size. I need to remove sections from within the file, it's NOT a simple matter of cutting the start or end.
So has anyone done this before? I tried using VirtualDub, but the resulting output is poor at best. All the othe rprograms are great for triming from the stat or finish, but none seem to work removing sections within the file.
Am I forced to trim the video into two clips and then join them? If so, what would be better to edit in? Should I edit the AVI or should I encode the MPEG first and then edit the file?

Savant

Have you looked into Camtasia Producer (www.techsmith.com)? The nice thing about this package is that you can create and save projects that reference the original movie rather than splitting and rejoining movie clips. It also allows you to add transitions between clips. I don't think you can cut out an interior segment directly, but you can easily create a project consisting of the first and second half.
The main downside is that it doesn't work with mpegs, but it sounds like that's not a problem in your case. -
I am not sure of your problem with virtualdub. Does it produce a quality worser than the original. Try Video -> Direct Stream Copy. and then save the file.
To remove intermediate frames, open the file in VirtualDub and select the range you want to delete. Press the DEL key on your keyboard. -
The problem was that it was producing an output that had loads of dropped frames. I tried all the different settings. (direct, full process etc)
I don't know why it did this. (since I didn't have the problem withg the original) What I ended up doing was just re-encoding the original source in AVI segmants, then after I converted them to MPG I joined the file in TMPGenc. Not the easiest way but better than nothing.
