I accidentally took a video "in the wrong direction". How can I PERMANENTLY rotate it by 90 degrees?

I can do it, just for watching, on the VLC Window Player (through tools, and filter) but there's no way to save it that way. I want to include it in a DVD that I'm making.

https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/334116-Rotating-Video?p=2072907&viewfull=1#post2072907 . (You can also convert it directly to dvd mpeg2 format in avidemux...if you are going to make a dvd-video then)

And this is not any media issue. Moving you.

Unfortunately I'm not tech-savvy; Avidemux gives a number of download choices; which would make it easiest for me ?

I'm making a dvd through "ProShowGold" which combines slides and videos. The individual videos should be in .avi format.

    thank you, I've downloaded it.

I opened that particular video, went to edit, then filter, but get the mesage "video filters cannot be applied in copy mode", and that the video needs to be transcoded.

I don't know what that means, and how do I do it?

Use the pulldown in the Video section to select a codec and configure it. To permanently rotate the video it has to be decompressed, rotated, the recompressed.

when I look at the menu in the video section, there are 14 choices - what is a codec? and how would I configure it?

I'm afraid I'm quite ignorant - could you possibly lead me step by step? I really would appreciate it - thank you.

You first need to know the codec (The format it's in at present.) Since you made it with a camcorder, maybe H.264. You can use MediaInfo to tell you all about your video. Post the results, 'Tree view' if you're confused. MediaInfo is definitely worth having on your PC.

Next is what final format you want to use. If it's for a DVD, then you would want MPEG-2. If just for computer use, maybe keep in H.264 or convert to Divx/Xvid. Lots of ways to go, depending on what you want to do with it.

Other minor problems are the resolution, the size of the video frame, and the audio format. DVDs commonly use 720 X 480 in the US. Audio is commonly AC3 or PCM. Xvid/Divx commonly uses MP3 for audio.

I know this may all sound complicated, but when you do it a few times, it gets easier.

I downloaded MediaInfo; then it asked me to download Driver Performer, which I did. But I cannot find any place that would tell me the codec of my video. I did not shoot it with a camcorder, but with the "movie" button on my little camera (either an old Kyocera, or an almost as old Nikon Coolpix.

But, once I know the codec, then how and to what do I convert it?

I intend to import it onto "ProShowGold" (producing a dvd out of slides and videos). The videos I've been importing in the past have been .avi.

This particular video, that I'm trying to rotate, happens to be perfect as it is - I am happy with the resolution and audio.

    Many thanks for your patience.

  9. How big is your video? If you have only one little video to rotate maybe you can just upload it and someone will fix it for you.

Open the video in Mediainfo put it in view/text mode and post the results in here.

Then somebody will show you how to set up Avidemux.

Not sure what "Driver Performer" is, but it is not necessary for mediainfo.

I rotated and re-encoded a test file using the same codec as you have above
(mjpeg) using Avidemux and I also tried it with AVC (h264).
The H264 version produced a better result.

Why don't you try, and see what you prefer? Open the video in Avidemux. On the left, under "video" set it to mjpeg.
Select filters/transform/rotate (set your 90 degrees and close the dialog)

Set the "output format" to AVI. At the top file/save, set path and complete filename . eg. new video.avi

If you wish to try H264 (AVC), it's as above except set "video'" to AVC.
Either keep it in an AVI, or perhaps MKV.

I followed your instructions and it did rotate - but there's no provision for me to save it.

I suspect that I still have to go through the codec maneuver?

I don't have a floppy disc icon on the Video Filter Manager window. And if I go back to the first window and click File>Save, it'll just save the original, horizontal video.

  16. You don't save the video from the filter dialog. After adding the filter you go back to the main dialog and save via the floppy disc icon of File -> Save.

    1) File -> Open
    2) Video -> select codec
    3) Video -> Configure... adjust settings if necessary
    4) Video -> Filters -> add Rotate filter (make sure it shows up in the right pane) close filter dialog
    5) Format -> select output format (AVI, MP4, whatever).
    6) File -> Save -> Save Video... be sure to include the file extension
