I've tried to download the binary from the ffmpegx website, but all I get is stuff like this:
Êþº¾Êþº¾1 PVèþíúÎ
Am I doing something wrong? I have a G5 iMac running Panther.

Command-click the link (or right-click on the link, if you have a mouse or trackpad with more than one button, and select your browser's equivalent of "Save Link As".) If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

It doesn't matter. The installer is smart enough to take care of that.

It means something went wrong with the installation of the binaries. At application launch, the binaries are checked for validity. The binary noted in red is not good. That binary should be installed again. Do verify the size of the binary (a relatively easy check):
 mpeg2enc.intel 501,480 bytes
 mencoder 16,655,780 bytes
 mplayer 15,869,784 bytes

If the installer lists mencoder and mplayer in red, then please verify that you pointed the installer to the unzipped files.
If the installer lists mpeg2enc in red, then give this copy a try. Unzip before use.
The installer will overwrite the invalid file with the new file.
