All of the computers in my house use stereo speakers with a subwoofer.
For years and years now with all of my DivX movies when played in VLC or MPC i am always experiencing audio problems.
For example if people on a movie are talking i have to go and turn up the volume to almost the absolute max but then when action happens on a movie for example an explosion it is absolutely deafening and have to rush to the TV to turn down the volume.
I was just wondering if there is a setting i need to change or a piece of software or even another media player where all audio is kept to one level without me keep having to go to the speakers and continuesly turn the volume up and down.
I did try to change the audio output setting on VLC to 5.1 on some moviies which improves it a BIT but not much.

    Any ideas people?

I don't know a whole lot about "Divx movies".....I can only guess at their origin. Most "Divx movies" I've come across only contain stereo audio. Either the encoder of this "Divx movie" chose an encoding program that does a terrible job at downmixing, or you need to find something other than a 5.1 setting on your system....because stereo speakers with a subwoofer is not 5.1 audio.

95% of DVDs contain AC3 audio.....still doesn't change the fact that you don't have enough speakers for 5.1 audio......that's even IF your files actually contain 5.1 audio. A simple run through GSpot or MediaInfo will verify what you have in those files.

  5. If you only have stereo speakers with a sub you have a 2.1 system. If you're set up for 5.1 the center channel (which contains the dialog) is going to a non-existent speaker. That's why you don't hear it. Change you speaker setup to 2.1.
