I was just looking at newegg at hard drive prices and they seem to have SKYROCKETED!!!!!!

    WTF is going on ?!?!?!

On 9/8/2011 i bought this HDD for $134.99,
    Now it is $249.99
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136792

I was looking and even the cheapest WD 1tb is 129.99!!
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136776

The 750gb WD black i bought for $49.99 is now listed at $119.99!!!

I have looked at a couple of online retailers and prices just seemed to have went through the roof for some reason!!

It can't be because of the holiday's as the increases are just insane!!

    Am i missing something ?
It only seem's to be SATA HDD's.

    Not CPU's, ram, etc.

    When did this happen ?

Because even yesterday i was looking at Tigerdirect showing a friend some of the DIY kits and they had like 32+ and a one with 6 core and 1tb HDD's and tonight they have like 20 DIY kits and the prices increased

Like a 6 core with 4gigs of ram and a 500gig hdd for 309.00 and yesterday they had a faster 6 core with 8gigs of ram and a 1tb hdd, better mobo, etc. for 350.00!!

I figured they just sold out of a ton of DIY kits so i started going through Newegg putting together some setups and when i got to the HDD's i was like WTF ?!?!?!

I was hoping maybe it was because SSD dropped to like 500gb for $100.00!!
    LOL!!!

Yes, it's the floods. I heard WD has completely shut down HDD production. If you need a deal, Best Buy has 2TB Seagate 5900RPM drive for $75 this week. Unfortunately I bought one of these last week for $100, but may get another.

Terabyte USB Drives are 80 Bucks at Walmart ... WD and Seagate ... saw this Nov 1st or Nov 2nd

You could get one and open it up and take the hard drive out of the enclosure.

And use the interface with a spare sata drive laying around ... I am doing that ... I've got a few USB 500 GB units that I bought around 2008 and eventually started having problems. They are now taken apart and the sata interface now sits on my shelf with a 500 GB or a 320 GB connected to the electronics board interface. They work just fine ... picture shows two of them at work.

  10. I'm regretting upgrading my setup in multiple steps. I grabbed a couple 2 TB Seagate Barracuda Green ST2000DL003s with 64 MB cache and SATA 6 Gb/s for under $70 a piece. Now they are priced around $229.99 each. I had planned on getting a few more but it looks like I'll be waiting awhile.

It'll be interesting to see how pricing for HDDs works out during the holiday sales.

  11. Yes, the floods have caused a shortage, sending drive prices way up:

    http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2011/11/03/disk_drive_prices_may_double/

Destkop DRAM is cheap though. Got 8 GB of DDR3 1600 for $25 yesterday!

HemLok, the Seagate ST2000DL0003s is on sale at Best Buy this week for $75 in retail box (till Saturday, I presume). The photo/specs are showing the SATA II / 32MB cache version, but they are actually the newer SATA III / 64MB cache model in the box. You have to go to store to buy however, since they seem to be sold out online:

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Seagate+-+Barracuda+2TB+Internal+Serial+ATA+Hard+Drive+for...&skuId=9419382

Who would have thunk that Best Buy would actually be the best buy on hard drives?

Local Fry's. In store, Wed. and Thu. only. Kingston HyperX. I've seen deals like this several times over the last few weeks. The in-store price was $45, with a $20 mail in rebate -- PITA but worth it I guess.

The drop in prices was caused by a glut of Desktop memory as the migration to the tablets (which use laptop memory) was faster than expected.

I recently covered my HDD needs with a 2TB Hitachi for $64 @ Fry's. I figured I'd get more in Black Friday sales.

Then I lost a 2009 1.5TB and now I'm screwed. I'm going shopping locally for hard drives tomorrow.

    Yikes 27F degrees temp outside.

switch to samsung f3 drives, they have 5 year warranties, or f4 with 3yrs.

I ordered three ST2000DL003 drives (~Ł78 each) from Amazon last night ahead of my NAS purchase.

By this morning Amazon had sold out and other suppliers were charging twice the price

    today from npr.org about thailand.

The floods have already closed more than 1,000 factories, including several auto and computer hard-drive makers north of Bangkok in the tourist town of Ayutthaya. Many factories are likely to be closed for months. And manufacturers are already warning of supply-chain disruptions worldwide.

they do appear interesting, a seagate with a 5 year warranty.... might need to try a few also, as who knows when prices will come back down to pre-flood levels.

edit - they are limiting orders to 1 drive, none in stock local, and no shipping, pickup only.

  24. I picked mine up this afternoon and am setting it up now. Nice to be able to order it online and be sure they'll still have one for you when you can get to the store.

I wonder how long until they sell out?

I have a Lacie 500Gb triple interface external that I suspect the controller is failing but the hard drives are fine. Is there any way of disassembling the unit and use the HDD's as spares/internal? Here's how it looks:

they usually have a plastic front cover that is just snapped on. once inside you should be able to see how to get the drive out.

All sides (including the front cover) are metallic and thick, tightly joined like a Panzer tank.

there should be removable covers over screws holding it together then. they may be under stickers, or plugin covers.

These Seagates are 5900 RPM Green drives but perfect in the home server for video playout. I pulled the smaller 7200 RPM drives for use in the workstations.
