I don't know what the hell I could have done, but I just tried to open stupid Vegas 10.0, and all the preview windows are gone. The top half of the software windows no longer has those two screens. What in the world?...

It worked and looked fine just yesterday. I completed a project just under 24 hours ago, but I never did anything that could have been intended to remove those features.

Could somebody tell me how to go back to the default look of Vegas 10, please?

Look in the "View" menu under default layout.

Vegas is designed "modularly" so it can be arranged between several screens, and windows snap inside other windows so it's easy to get messed up.

The main windows are Editing, Dock, Trimmer, and Preview.

  3. Ya, plus there are the little minimize buttons on the window frames. It's easy to accidentally hide one. Once you get used to the modularity, it can actually be really nice to work with, especially if you have multiple displays.

I must bow to the master genius!

Thanks a million, Aedipuss! You sure know your stuff. ...The simplest greatest solution I could have gotten!

(And I should definitely explore the menus more, myself.)

Budwzr and Magillagorilla, thank you, too.

hey no problem, we've all been there. i once opened vegas to start a rush project and there was no timeline. i freaked out so bad i uninstalled vegas and every folder that had sony in it's name. reinstalled and all was well. a couple days later i was looking through the menu for something and ran across the restore layout command. smacked myself in the forehead and called myself some apropos names.

In Vegas, you can also save any custom user workspace layouts.
