Can anyone tell me if a wireless Lavalier mike system will work with the Canon VIXIA HF G10?

Wireless mic system have a line level output. So if your camcorder has a line-in jack, then it would work.

If it only has a mic-in jack, then you need to reduce the output level from the mic system. You can do that either by turning down the output volume (if it has such control), or add a volume control, or signal attenuator.

    REALLY!!!???!!!
    I´ll pretend I didn´t read that

The Canon VIXIA HF G10 includes a stereo miniplug input jack (acording to the company´s specs), camera mounted lavalier systems (from low end consumer models from Sima or Nady, to prosumer mid level ones like Azden, Audio Technica or Samson all the way to the high end models by Senheiser, Shure or Lectrosonics as well as the entire Sony range, all provide MIC LEVEL output (some may include line level output as well), many models will also allow you to trim the output´s level to match recording equipment.

What you should consider is that this particular Canon camcorder has a stereo miniplug mic jack, higher end mic systems have balanced XLR conectors in wich case you´d need an adaptor like this:

Thanks for the info julitomg. I don’t know if I’m actually going to upgrade to the Canon VIXIA HF G10, but having wireless mic capability is definitely something I want.

It also sounds like my current Canon VIXIA HV30 would work with a wireless Lavalier mike system. Would that be correct?

Yes the HV30 should work. The HV30 and G10 have unbalanced high impedance mic level inputs. You need to use a mic system designed for consumer camcorder mic jacks for it to work directly.

Pro mic systems (wired or wireless) output low impedance, balanced mic or line levels. To adapt these inputs to a consumer camcorder mic input you need more than just a connector adapter as suggested by julitomg. You need an impedance matching transformer to isolate low impedance balanced pro equipment from high imprdance unbalanced consumer mic jacks. The transformer also provides DC isolation. DC can distort the mic waveform.

For a single mic you can use a Shure A96f camcorder interface transformer. A better solution is a Beachtek DXA-2T pro mic/line transformer/adapter which handles two pro mics and provides level controls. You switch the camcorder to manual audio level, set the camcorder audio level to mid position, then control levels from the Beachtek.

If you buy the prosumer Canon XA10 instead of the consumer HF G10, all these features are included in an XLR hot shoe adapter. Otherwise the two camcorders are similar.

Better to get a wireless mic (Azden/Nady/etc) designed for a consumer camcorder mic jack. If you go with pro audio you end up with lots of extra boxes and cables like this picture.

So, it is possible to use the Audio-Technica Pro 88W system with my existing VIXIA HV30? That would be very nice tp be able to use this with my HV30 and not be in a rush to upgrade a perfectly good camera.

Yes that should work with the HV30. It terminates in a mono plug. If you get a dual mono minijack to stereo miniplug adapter, you can use two mono mics.

Thanks for the help. I’ll try to remember to post back with the results of it all. Probably going to be after the new year till I have the cash.
