Ok...so here's the deal. I am a newbie.
I've ripped like 2 DVDs with no probs. Quality is good, sound is good and in sync. (damn those fags) Only thing is, I'm screwing up the the aspect ratio somewhere along the way. The video seems like the ppl are really stretched out tall and skinny.
For example, I ripped a movie with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio and I tried to find a setting to encode or rip or whatever at that ratio, but I Could not. So the end product was a square screen. What do I neeed to do to keep the rigtht aspect ratio so my ppl don't look all skinny.
I have been using smartripper, dvd2avi, and TMPGenc.
Do I need to get new tools? Or what?
Please help!! IM me if you want. HuntsterUNC on AIM

How are you checking your video?
In a DvD player connect to a TV or with a DvD player on the PC it should look OK, but with windows media player it will look square...
SVCD resolution is 480x480 (square) but when played in a DvD player or with a DvD software, the movie is strech out horizontally and you should see the movie in a 4:3 format. In the case of a 1:85 movie, you should see little black bars at top and bottom of the screen on a 4:3 TV. In fact, it should look exactly the same has when you play the original DvD in your DvD.
If your ripping DvD's and are making SVCD, I strongly suggest you use DVD2SVCD. You can configure it to use TMPGEnc. DVD2SVCD use lots of different software but they all come include in the package except the video encoder. But you already have TMPGEnc, so it would be easy for you to configure it and use it...
