I have a PAL DVD rip I want to burn, but I want it to burn as NTSC. I have American blank DVDs so would it convert to NTSC upon burning (I use Toast Titanium), or would it make the DVD a PAL because of what I'm burning to it? In any case, is there a simple way to do what I'm wanting to do?

Blank DVDs do not have either PAL or NTSC format; they are blank. They will accept authored VIDEO_TS structures in whatever format you create.

You will have to re-encode and utilize software that will alter the frame rate from 29.97 fps to 25 fps.

Alternatively, forget the DVD and use a media player like the WDTV Live (about $100). Rip the DVD to MP4 keeping whatever frame rate the DVD has. Drop the resulting video into a disc and connect it to the WDTV player; it will play properly on your NTSC TV regardless of its original format (PAL/NTSC).

Jeikobu - I'm going to give you my standard advice. If you have to do this converting of PAL DVDs to NTSC more than twice, you're better off just buying a cheap DVD player that can convert rather than doing it. The Philips DVP3560 only costs about $40 in Best Buy and it can convert PAL DVD to NTSC video output. Mac is a terrible platform for this kind of thing. All the guides are written to use Windows tools for this.

I rarely come across PAL dvds, but found one just yesterday and converted to NTSC using AVStoDVD and it did a fine job. Surprised me.

If i understand the question; You have a movie riped to your hard drive you would like to convert said DVD from its native Pal format to NTSC. And i assuming you wish to do this so that you may burn the disk to play back in a dvd player that does not play pal dvds.

Can it be done? Yes, but not easily.
I believe one of the simplest ways would be to join the vobs convert the vob to ntsc standard and re-author. (I not aware of any free tools for MAC to allow you to convert the video format, or author a DVD you would have to buy the required tools in which case it would be cheaper to by a region free Blu-ray/DVD player.

If you wish to keep the menu structure in tact the task becomes twice as difficult.
Murphy's law taught me everything I know.

  8. It is fairly simple if you don't want to keep the menus intact. What i'll do is rip the dvd to my hard drive, YADE to extract the main feature into one VOB, and then i'll use either Visualhub or MPEG2 Works 4 to convert to NTSC. The nice thing about Visualhub is it will convert and also author as DVD.
