I have a source video with the dimensions 1280x694
If i upload the video as is on youtube will it offer it in 720p?
I'd hate to go encoding it again just to stretch it out so it meets specifications..

Since one dimension is "HD" it might well work, but they will letterbox it for sure.
That's a good question, actually, since YT has preset display resolutions. The question is if your video is larger that 480p (or one dimension is), will they bump you up to the next size, which is 720p.
Why don't you try it, and post back.Last edited by budwzr; 13th Oct 2011 at 09:40.

Interesting ... the above video is not letterboxed - looks pretty good.

bzzt, wrong answer. 720p is defined as 1280x720 with progressive scan, anything else is not 720p.
the video you post, the one on the left looks fine, they one on the right looks retarded (it looks "squished"). 1280x480 doesn't come close to equaling 720p unless you drop significant amounts of acid on a regular basis. -
I'm confused why You tube shouldn't reject 720x694... What is that?
720p is square pixel. Youtube wants 30p (29.97p)Last edited by edDV; 13th Oct 2011 at 20:14.

From the tests I've done and what others have said in the past, YouTube:
1. re-encodes all uploaded videos
2. requires that videos have square pixels*
3. will make use of the display aspect ratio flag to determine (2.)
*Divide your video's width by the height. If the number you get doesn't match the display aspect ratio flag, your video doesn't have square pixels and YT will resize.
DAR / (width / height) = PAR
DAR = display aspect ratio - final shape of the picture
PAR = pixel aspect ratio - shape of each pixel
It doesn't matter if the uploaded video isn't one of YT's common resolutions (640x360, 854x480, etc) as long as the pixel aspect ratio (PAR) works out to 1:1
So, if your 1280x694 video has an aspect ratio of ~1.84:1 it won't be resized. If the AR is set to 1.78:1 (16:9 for example), YT will probably resize to 1280x720.
Only you know what the AR should be - make sure it's set correctly. -

Seems to be from house guests on an open downstairs computer. I still don't get what they were trying to say.
