I have an AIW radeon and I am happy with it (now that i finally got the drivers to work with it). You can get them pretty cheap now that the new radeons are out.

Try an ATI All in Wonder Radeon, 32MB DDR. The price range is what you're looking for and you should be able to get great results with the card.

Here are some specs for the rest of my system.

1.1 ghz AMD Thunderbird (overclocked to 1.16)
    1024 MB Crucial RAM
    Abit KT7A Motherboard
    2 - Maxtor 7,200 RPM 30 gig hard drives

After playing around with some drivers and finding the right software, I'm able to capture at 640X480, without dropping any frames, even during extended captures.

  5. I recently ordered a capture card from hauppage on Dell.com, and I received it, and is great! Definitely a great card. It has the normal connection for cable, but the great thing about this card is that it also has connections for RCA plugs (the white, red, and yellow plugs that are used by video game systems. This card was also only 100 dollars to. That is what I reccomend to you.
    Wow Dude, Wow.

  7. I would also give a thumbs up to the Radeon AIW 32MB. I used to get dropped frames and had problems till I upgraded my box to an Athlon 1.2. Now I'm getting great Mpeg2 captures without losing any frames. I've been capturing some Invader Zim off of DirecTivo, and the colors are nice with good edges on stuff. Once I get the conversion to DVD nailed down, I'll be 'Dancin like a Monkey!'

FYI - unless your really heavy into games, there really isn't any reason to go higher up the ATI chain for capturing, since I believe the newer cards use all of the same capture chips/codecs.
