  1. On one of my numerous computers (all XP/SP3), when I SINGLE left click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon, available items are shown in a small popup right above the icon (DOUBLE-clicking gives a completely different, larger popup elsewhere onscreen). When I click on the USB thumb drive I want to remove, I get ONLY the audible sound on my XP/SP3 computer WITHOUT the small popup confirming it's okay to remove the hardware.

I've searched everywhere (Google and Bing are NOT my friends this time), but I never see any solutions given about restoring the smaller popup after the SINGLE click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon. On all my other computers, that small "Safe to Remove Hardware" confirmation pops up at the same time I hear the audible notification.

Other PC users seem to have this problem, but the posted answers tend to involve how to return the initial popup "Safely Remove Hardware," the first step in the process, but that's not what folks like me are trying to solve. We're trying to solve the lack of a popup at the last step in the process, confirming it's now okay to remove the hardware.

    Any suggestions?

This might work for you (mind you that I haven't tried this):

    1) With the device plugged in, open up an explorer window (right click on My Computer and select Explorer).

    2) Right click on the USB device and select Properties.

    3) Select the Hardware tab.

    4) In the "All disk drives:" window, highlight your device, then click on Properties.

    5) Click on the Policies tab.

    6) Your device should have "Optimize for quick removal" checked, since it doesn't need to prep the device for removal.

    7) Select "Optimize for performance" to get the popup back.

The reason that you are not getting the popup, is that the system isn't caching the writes - it immediately writes to the device. This allows someone to just "jerk" the USB drive out and move on. If you did this with "Optimize for performance" checked, the device you just pulled out most likely wouldn't have your data on it.

Not sure your suggestion will help the o.p. I also have XP & SP3, and my device has "Optimize for quick removal" checked (your step #6) but I still get the 2nd small "Safe to Remove Hardware" confirmation message after I first left click the device icon to get the "Safely Remove Hardware" message. So I think something else is going on with his PC.

  8. sp8rt1cus: Thanks for the hint, but what am I looking for?

Bjs: I tried the MS hotfix, but when I tried to install it, I got a message that what was already installed was newer than the hotfix, so didn't continue.

  9. After trying numerous suggestions without success, I just figured I'd have to live with this annoyance . . . .

Suddenly, the second pop-up has returned . . . . No idea why or what suggestion might have worked on a "delayed" basis . . . .

    I just love Windows . . . . .
