Interesting. Have you got any more info/links on that?
I can see the difference in lighting style from S3 onwards. The softer, more natural look was carried on to the later shows (DS9/VOY) as well. There were quite a few other changes made between S2 and S3. Costumes, set modification, return of Gates McFadden.

There is a difference between watching on tv and purchasing. I just won't buy any 4:3 BR movies but I do own bw older classic DVD movies in 4:3. Of those that interest me, few BR / HD movies worth buying were originally shot as pure 16:9, so of course I don't mind 2:39:1 it's preferred to the often chopped up 16:9 version shown on HD tv. In some circles the term 4:3 vs 16:9 is often used just to differentiate fullscreen from widescreen.
I'm a big fan of Star Trek TOS, TNG and Voyager so I've seen every episode multiple times on tv. I'd buy those on BR but only widescreen. It's personal taste but I wouldn't buy the other 2 series because they are not worth it to me. IMO, ST Enterprise failed some time after season 2. When they introduced the Xindi which eventually took the series in the wrong direction where the episodes could no longer stand alone. The show became too engrossed on the single Xindi theme for far too long which I feel led to its earlier than expected demise.
DS9 didn't hold my interest when it first aired because you no longer boldly went to the new alien civilizations but waited for them to come to you. I learned to appreciate the supporting characters on the station in reruns of the early years but eventually the whole focus on the prophets became boring and it got away from original Star Trek fare. Those last 2 series are not worth the money for me even if they were available in widescreen just to put them on a shelf.There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway. -
Sorry for the late reply;
That's my point - you don't mind 2:39:1 with the bars at the top/bottom because the alternative might be to loose part of the original picture. How is that different to 4:3 TNG on Bluray? All that's different is the bars are at the side. Cropping to 16:9 would hurt the original composition to some degree, just like cropping some 2.39:1 movies.

I liked DS9 for its plots spanning multiple episodes, rather than other Trek series (mostly) standalone episodes.
But it really depends on whether the audience finds the story arc interesting. If they don't or get bored of it prematurely, people will switch off for prolonged periods or might not come back to the series at all. Also, any viewers tuning in for the first time wouldn't have a clue to the backplot. At least with TNG, if you didn't like a particular episode the slate would be wiped clean for the next week.
I didn't really get into Enterprise.
I'll get TNG, DS9 and VOY if/when they're available on Bluray and a reasonable price. -
Nice try intracube, but my experience is that people like gl99 can't really be talked into changing their minds on the subject. It's kind of like trying to convince someone who despises the taste of brussel sprouts that they really are very tasty and surely they would like them if they would only try them one more time.

In case anyone hasn't checked TrekCore recently, the site now has well over 100 images from the Blu-ray disc and additional bits and pieces:

Less than 48 hours to go.
All I need now is a Blu-ray player... ...and HDTV. -
I have a 77" diagonal screen for my projector and completely agree with gll99 on the 4:3 vs 16:9 issue. I'm a big fan of TNG and would buy on Blu-ray only if it's in widescreen format.
I didn't care much for "Enterprise" but the last episode, "These are the voyages" is a must see for TNG fans.
