Well I took the plunge and built a brand new core i7 system with Win7 64 bit. Getting all the drivers installed and then I find out that there is no Win 7 64bit driver available for my Adaptec 2944UW SCSI card that connects my Quantum DLT8000:

    http://www.adaptec.com/en-us/support/scsi/2940/aha-2944uw/

And according to the Quantum guy, he doesn't even think the DLT8000 will run on Win7 64.

So now I'm not sure what to do. If you don't use a DLT, how can I master a DVD-9 for replication? I'm not using any copy protection features.

Talk to your replication house. Many will allow you to put layers 1 and 2 on separate DVD-5 discs. (Don't ask me how to prep the discs; I've never ventured beyond DLT submission myself.)

Are you putting out so much video material that it requires a DVD-9? Unless you're making a 2-hour action movie with bonus material, it might not even be necessary. I've read posts here from people who successfully master to DVD-5 and turn it over to their replicators without issues.

Thanks for the heads up about Win 7 issues with your SCSI card and Quantum DLT drive. It makes me think twice about abandoning Win XP. Worse case scenario: you might have to have a dedicated Win XP box for DVD mastering.

SCSI is pretty old technology now. I think it's a bit much to be expecting 64 bit drivers for Win 7. If you have ancient technology you've got to stick with 32 bit Windows for the best chance for success. I'm not saying this will work, but if you have an XP install disc you could try installing XP to a 32 bit VM and you might be able to get the drivers installed under the VM.

I'm no replication house expert, but I've even heard of a few that will supposedly let you submit DVD+R DL discs.

Hi, thanks for the replies. What is a 32 bit VM?

I've submitted a few DVD+R DL discs, also DLT (both with and without Copy protection). Also some replication houses will now take an ISO on external Harddrive. Yeah, that's one area where many of the Pros haven't caught up with the times...

@sdsumike619, what app are you using for authoring/mastering?

  6. I havent delivered A DLT in years For mastering and I do 5-10 a week

Even the largest authoring and replication facility in the US, Technicolor, delivers DDP images on DVD-R

If youre still delivering DLT, youre behind on the times

Ok, dilemma solved. I just talked to Synchro and they use GEAR and accept submission via FTP, or on burned DVDs. Anyone want to buy a DLT 8000 (not many hours of use) and SCSI card?
