I recorded an .avi using huffyuv compression. The video will play fine on my computer. But I absolutely cannot get Vegas to open it at all, despite the fact that the proper codec is installed. It won't let me drag it over to add to the session, and if I simply double click on the file I get an error occured while opening a codec.
The codec works fine, but Vegas seems to be unable to perform the simple function of opening a file. What gives?

Windows has two built in video subsystems, DirectShow and VFW. Codecs for one don't work with the other. In addition, any program can use its own private internal codecs. If you are running 64 bit Windows there are both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of each of those video subsystems. 32 bit programs can't access 64 bit codecs, and vice versa. So just because you installed a codec doesn't mean that every program will have access to it.
That said, I know people are using HuffYUV with Vegas. So it's just a matter of getting the right version. If you're running a 64 bit version of Vegas make sure you have a 64 bit HuffYUV decoder.
