MediaInfo should do what you want. The older Gspot might give you some more info for some files.

cool.... am I correct in assuming that handbrake can be used to "fix it" or will this conversion(probably second one) be too lossy?
Maybe I need to get the info first and see what I'm dealing with...
    Thanks

OK.. showing my ignorance here...... after a little reading..... AVC is, can be x264? codec id = isom?? sound more like it?

  6. Is it really an MP4 file? Anybody can rename a file with whatever extension they want. What did MediaInfo say about the container?

If it is MP4 it maybe encoded with settings the xbox 360 can't handle. The first thing to try is changing the Profile@Level flag. If that doesn't work you'll have to reencode with more xbox 360 friendly settings.

It says format is MPEG 4. codec id = isom.. format profile = HIGH@L4.1. Please pardon my ignorance...

  8. Yes, it's really an MP4 file. The xbox 360 should be able to play AVC High@L4.1. Maybe the audio codec isn't supported?

It says it's AAC... does bitrate matter with the xbox??

  10. Is it 5.1 channel AAC? I'm pretty sure the xbox 360 only supports 2.0 AAC.

It says it's 446kbps at 48khz, 6 channel aac.... the problem maybe?

  12. Yes, 6 channal AAC is probably the problem. Try muxing only the video track into an MP4 file. See if that plays. If so, you know the problem is the audio.

  14. Try to encode H264 to Baseline quality insert High for save.
I use Drag Drop Convert GUI v 1.0.0.1 convert them to H264 Baseline video and AAC audio, it can play even on Xbox 1.0.

Ok... the 6 channel audio is the issue. Options?
I ran the file through handbrake and it will play now, but the audio is out of sync.(actually seems to go in and out of sync)
Is there a way to strip the audio from the origional file, downmix(or convert) to 2 channel, and re-combine the two files and have them in sync ?
    Thanks

Audacity with the ffmpeg plugin can import the 6 channel audio from the MPG file, downmix to stereo, and export as 2 channel AAC (again with the ffmpeg plugin). You can then mux the new audio and the old video with YAMB or MP4Box or Handbrake.
