AMD Showcases World’s Fastest CPU

The AMD FX CPU, set to launch in the fourth quarter of 2011, achieved a top speed of 8.429 GHz, surpassing the previous record of 8.308 GHz. The record was set on Aug. 31, 2011, in Austin, Texas, by “Team AMD FX,” a group comprised of elite overclocking specialists working alongside top AMD technologists, who will also be named in the Guinness World Records.

I just came across this and didn't see anything here about it so.......
I wonder how many they burned up before achieving that overclock ?

Man am i glad i put my new system together with a mobo that supports the new Bulldozer CPU's

I know i won't be running any kind of speeds like that, but man will it be nice!!!!!!

I thought i read they were going to be released Sept. 19th but now i saw something that said mid-Oct.

yeah i saw that and was going to post about it but part of me remembers the P4 that likewise could be overclocked really high but clock for clock performance was abysmal.

let's be honest with ourselves, no regular user will be overclocking their cpu that high and part of me worries that amd is pulling a P4, i.e. trying to crank up the clock speed to compensate for poor relative performance.

in this test against an undisclosed i5 and an unspecified 8 core bulldozer the delta isn't all that great considering the test parameters.

these benchmark numbers are strongly disputed but it shows an 8 core bulldozer comparably clocked to an X6 and the numbers don't paint a confidence inspiring picture.
