Or take advantage of the free blockbuster with a Dishnetwork subscription promotion. They are giving the 1 by mail and can be swapped at the store. At least some of the Netflix loss is because of the Dish/BB deal, Based on postings I'm seeing on the satellite forums.

To put it another way you get one in the mail, you can exchange it at the store, then that one when returned triggers the next mail DVD. You might have seen their commercial with the cowboys in the really large hats. Some people werre snickering when they bought BB for 200+ million. Now it looks like a good marketing tool as well as a way to get titles for their version of VOD.
Plus I seem to recollect that they get new titles a month ahead of Netflix and Redbox too.
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

First AAPL missed their numbers (first time in years) and the stock came into question.

Then NFLX confirmed 800K lost subscribers (but a small overall %). Their stock sank more.

Today AMZN missed their numbers for the first time in many months.

  4. Thanks Ed.

Not surprising that companies are missing their numbers the way the economy is looking.
If I had predicted sales this year based on last years numbers I'd be way under the prediction.
It isn't looking good from here.

As for Netflix, What were they thinking. I know from reading the satellite forums that they are losing customers to the free Dishnetwork 1 DVD, plan.
Dishnetwork has been giving away a lot of decent freebies. One year of Starz for their anniversary, now free Blockbuster with the Platinum pack and I believe both of those free to new subscribers for a year. I believe they also were first between the two satellite companies to go free HD with your subscription to the SD channels.

Dish also has bought up some wireless spectrum. They may be situated to give Netflix a big headache.
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

  5. Netflix was giving free Starz too....

BB takes time & gas to get to the store. Redbox is nice you can get games.

  6. After reading through these threads there seems to be a discussion of alternatives for Netflix, pay satellite and cable. Yes...having a Netflix account and using an antenna for DTV could cut your monthly tv bill down, but two things stand out that effect ALOT of people not ready to cut the cable or sat. strings. 1. is actual GOOD, not choppy DTV reception on HD ABC, NBC, FOX etc.. and 2. If your a college sports fan. NO ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and all other sports channels only offered by sat. and cable. That is what keeps me locked into sat. tv for now. Where you live will effect the DTV reception, and I have gone through 3 different antennas to find one that gets OK reception.

You may have access to ESPN3.com via your ISP. If not, you can get it via PlayOn. The quality isn't as good though.

  8. I have only one cable provider, and it is the only internet provider. If you pay for cable they give you access to espn3. I'll check into PlayOn. It doesn't appear to offer the sports... ESPN, ESPNU or ESPN2 in HD. I know at this point you can't have everything, but I hate to admit Im spoiled to HD programming now. Thanks for sharing info on PlayOn.

The Dishnetwork free Blockbuster is a one disk at a time by mail with the option to return to the store and exchange for one there.

They do have DVD, BluRay and games in that plan.

  10. I only cancelled because I need the money right now. But I will be back when things pick up. I was on the $11.99 plan (2 discs at a time, no streaming). A good deal as far as I am concerned. I never used the streaming anyways.

I think the people canceling are doing so hoping to get a free swag bag or something. A few bucks one way or the other surely can't make that much difference.
I was thinking about letting Directv go ... and just use my antenna on my roof with Digital TV Channels and ... get Netflix Streaming ... but ATT is bugging me about how much I'm downloading from the Internet ... my limit is 150 GBs ... and an additional 10 bucks for another 50 GBs ... Just be sure you are not within the two year commitment or you'll get banged for an early termination fee of up to $300. DirecTV extends the commitment from when you sign up or add equipment. I would call them first and check on the commitment.

Btw you can also suspend service for 3 months at a time for twice a year or a total of 6months if money is tight and you expect it to become better later. If you suspend you keep the equipment whereas if you drop the service it goes back and if you decide to get DirecTV again it'll cost you.

Tell me, in what way do they bug you? Is it by email ?

I've yet to be bugged. I think.

  17. Netflix down to 85 today. (That's from a high of about 300 in July 2011) Get the coffin ready.

Still no movie rentals on their website. Only streaming. The great majority of the masses are not ready for streaming yet. Broadband too slow in outlying areas and special equipment required to stream directly to TV unless you just bought one recently that had streaming capabilities.

My prediction: They will be gone within 1 year.

I have no idea why you are saying this. I just logged into my account and had no problems finding plenty of movies to rent.

Netflix is partnering with Amazon to get more clout, fight Hollywood, and go global.

The negative press is coming from the Hollywood media crowd to fuel negative speculation about NF, and to dry up their sources of venture capital.

The initial splitting into two names was just a way to add another brand, but Hollywood spun it as a corporate shake up and uncertain future to shake up investors. You gotta think outside the box, and look at the big picture.

One of these days Hollywood is going to get an antitrust action for locking out competition in the distribution channels. It's just a matter of time.

I want to see independent films that are gritty, real, controversial, shocking, truthful, etc., not just the sugar coated MPAA rated stuff. The MPAA is controlled by Hollywood, and severely restricts what you can and can't do with a film, and if you bypass those censors, your film is dead, except for Netflix.

We The People should have access to independent films because they expose issues that the mainstream media is not allowed to air on broadcast because of the"public airways" nature of broadcast.

The war behind the "veil" is about price point. H'wood wants to keep prices up, NF wants to use the efficiency of streaming to lower prices.

And the other issue is distribution. H'wood wants to keep control and power, and an alternate distribution path is making them sweat bullets, those fat basterds with the Lou Wasserman glasses, you know the type, the one's Charlie Sheen went up against.

Amazon has the deep pockets to fight this out in court, and with some luck, may finally break the greedy distribution model that H'wood set up a long time ago to keep outsiders out. NF is #1 on H'wood's blacklist right now because they don't "play ball".

Thanks for the laugh, Netflix will be around for many years to come. The CEO made some bonheaded decisions this year that scared away a few subscribers but they will continue to grow in foreign countries. I bought NFLX when it dipped to $77 recently, it was oversold and I expect it to do nicely next year.

I don't think Hollywood wants to hurt Netflix. It's starting to look like a cash cow to them who they can milk for (to their minds) endless profits. Netflix's announcements were very badly worded and even the "apology" was pretty badly done too. The talk I saw about Netflix at the time was from 2 sources - investment insiders who mostly liked the idea of 2 companies as most of them viewed the streaming business as the crown jewels, and angry customers who were going to leave as a result.

TreeTops is dead on that many people are not interested in streaming. The US offers really poor internet speeds on the whole. I've seen some numbers and it's shocking how many people in the USA still use dialup and have reported no interest at all in faster internet if it costs more than dialup.

  24. Streaming is Netflix's fastest growing segment, almost every CE device sold nowadays has a Netflix app on it. It's true not everyone has a high-speed ISP in the US but there's still millions in other countries who will subscribe. Recent sales figures from Hollywood show physical sales dipped again but digital sales are up, people want to stream and the numbers prove it.

The people that don't want, or can't afford faster internet are not part of the demographic Netflix is after. The reason so many people canceled over a couple dollars increase is because those people are already paying for dish or cable, and Netflix was a cheap add-on for them.

That's why the CEO doesn't mind to let those people go, and focus on building a strong user base of people that want to dump mainstream media.

A lot of people have their internet, phone, and TV bundled for $99. They don't realize they can drop their home phone and just use cell, it's called a "dry line".

And it's mostly the working poor getting hosed by these media and communications companies.

  26. Neckflix and Amazon are maybe partnering up, but here in the uk Amazon has bought out Lovefilm, our version of Netflix (Unlimited streaming,Unlimited film & TV dvd 2 out at a time £9.99) and its already in 5 or six other countrys (north european) so maybe they have agreed to split europe 5050 and netflix will get Southern Europe, but no surely not, that would be anti-competitive!

Many people weren't interested in the early years of the internet either, and laughed it off.

Another thing is that I've noticed a general dumbing down in mainstream media content. It's all tabloid, truck drivers, dancing, and big bosom weathergirls and "news".

  28. Still no movie rentals on their website. Only streaming. When I go to this site: netflix.com I can't find any movie rentals, only streaming. So only members can see the movie rental page? OR am I blind? I am getting older so that may be the problem.

  29. You're right. If you don't have an account with NetFlix it's hard to find the DVD rental information.

From the "How It Works" section:
Can I get DVDs by mail from Netflix? Yes. During sign up, you can add unlimited DVDs (1 DVD out-at-a-time plan) for only $7.99 more a month. With DVDs by mail, you'll get an even broader selection of movies & TV episodes. You can exchange each DVD as often as you want with no due dates or late fees — ever! You can add access to Blu-ray discs to your account at any time for an additional $2 a month.

I see huge market in Europe, one movie and you just make closed captioning for most languages and you can stream in ant direction, no dubbing (I hope) , of course France will be perhaps the last country to join , they will have their "Netflix" for sure , ...,

so, I think anybody could compete with anybody, adding closed captioning and you can enter another country to offer streaming .... You go to western countries, you maybe do some business with English only but you go to eastern Europe and you need closed captioning,

and imagine streaming those movies the other way , towards US, more foreigners movies , that would happen simultaneously perhaps , I cannot wait to watch some down to Earth movies somewhere from Norway as an example ..., anybody seen Troll hunter ? (I'm not from Norway myself) ...http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Trollhunter/70170065?trkid=2361637 , exciting times ....
