Hey there,
I have Premiere Pro with the Mainconcept codec package. I understand this is supposed to allow me to render without recompressing, but I'm having a hard time figuring out whether it's working or not.
The thing is, I moved this project over from Vegas because the source is VOB files. The VOB files wouldn't play or render properly in Vegas due to their "soft pulldown." Gspot shows it as interlaced, 3:2 pulldown, 23.976 pics/s, 29.970 frames/s, and so on. Premiere, however, analyzes the file as progressive, analyzes the bitrate, and so on... but when I go to render, this analysis obviously doesn't match the original, because it doesn't smart-render. So, 2 questions:
(1) How do I even know if Premiere is smart-rendering?
(2) What should my export settings be for this kind of project?

1. It won't from a VOB. Only a few camcorder formats. No better than Vegas.
2. That depends what you want for destination.
For either, you need to demux, then inverse telecine externally to a supported camcorder format. Audio too.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

So, VOB files joined into one MPEG still won't smart render?
What I want is for it to be the same as the source file (with the exception of any new transitions I add), DVD format... Thus my interest in smart rendering. -
Not that I've heard of.
Vegas smart render is limited to select camcorder formats (e.g. DV, HDV, XDCAM, HDCAM, uncompressed*).
Premiere Pro has never boasted other than DV, DVCpro and uncompressed*.
For smart render to work in Vegas, source format must equal project format must equal export (render as) format. Everything else is re-encoded.
* unless you are talking RED or certain digital intermediates.Last edited by edDV; 14th Sep 2011 at 17:33.

edDV - I think he's using the Mainconcept MPEG Pro HD plugin . It definitely smart renders MPEG2 for premiere

Did you look at the manual?
You have to use the "mainconcept advanced export" option
You're using CS3 correct?
For MPEG-2 even if source
and target bitrate do not match, a special variant called smart requantization can take
effect. All this happens automatically under the hood, and under Premiere Pro CS3 the
export progress dialog will indicate whether smart rendering or smart requantization is
currently in process. Under Premiere Pro CS4 is no indicator and you will only notice the
high speed. -
If he was using the "Mainconcept MPEG Pro HD plugin for Premiere Pro" wouldn't he say so?

Can't even find the price on their website.Last edited by edDV; 14th Sep 2011 at 17:46.

You're right he should have made the topic more clear
It's a related topic derived from the end of this thread

Yes, it's sold as the Mainconcept Codec Suite for Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 (http://www.mainconcept.com/products/apps-plug-ins/plug-ins-for-adobe/codec-suite-cs-5.html)
So, I get attempting to match the input/output settings, and assuming I'm doing this correctly (file analysis)... I'd like to know if anyone knows firsthand how Premiere indicates that it is smart-rendering. Is it simply the speed?
It's been a hassle to work with, and I'm working on getting the original source instead of going from VOB, so hopefully this information will become moot sooner or later. But, just in case, that is my primary question. -
If you have that you must first demux the VOB to elementary steams. I see no claims that VOBs are supported.
Very few of us have this plug-in. The plug-in is very expensive. You should be talking with Mainconcept support.Last edited by edDV; 14th Sep 2011 at 18:30.
