  1. Hi all,
I have ordered a Sony Handycam HDR-CX115E, my 1st HD Camcorder. Asking if you use the highest quality settings on the camera how many hours will I get of filming using a 8gig or a 32gig SD card?

Also can anyone recommend a good solid card please? Not bothered about the price.

    Thank you

You can buy an SD card but I doubt it will fit in a Sony.

The card type recommended (usually class 6 up) and record times should all be spelled out in the manual.

Ok, thanks, what type of card do I need? As the camcorder is still on order!
    Thank you

If your camcorder did use SD cards it would be this

But as hech24 said, it doesn't. Your camcorder requires Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo flash ram cards. The manual will tell you which one. You can download the manual.

Sony has quietly made its latest generation camcorders, like this HDR-CX115, accept SD cards alongside memory stick. Good for all of us.
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".

Yes, and because of this I may actually buy a Sony camcorder. I always despised their propritary memory.

Handycams I don't know. DSLRs usually use Class 10. My ereader (Kobo) uses Class 4. Check your manual to be sure you have the right class card before buying anything...

  10. Josel, the higher the class of the card the less dropped frames you will have. The manual should state what the lowest class card the camcorder will accept. Since you stated that price was not a factor, I would go with a 32gb class 10 card. I bought one from Pny for my GoPro and have been very happy with it.

  11. Everyone stop telling the OP what card to buy unless you know what his camera needs. For example, my Canon HF100 will not recognize class 10 cards because the class didn't exist when the camera was made. Let the OP read the manual and buy the manufacture specified card.

That's false. You need to upgrade your firmware to 1.0.3.0. Your camera came out 4/2008, class 10 cards were first introduced 5/2009. I have a nikon d40x from 3/2007 that accepts class 10 cards. So to say that a piece of equipment will not accept class 10 cards because the class didn't exist is just not right.

No reason to go below Class 6 these days. No more expensive. Less likely to drop frames.

  15. @papakilo, good work. Much better than blind recommendations.

@mrswala, you are correct. My statement is a little off. Were my camera not firmware upgradeable class 10 cards would not work. I am assuming that they do not work because the class 10 specification did not exist, at the time of the firmware codeing, and therefore could not be written in to firmware. However, not all hardware has updatable firmware. So if a specification does not exist at the time in which a product is produced it would be foolish to assume that the product is forward compatible with the specification.

I wasn't trying to harsh on anyone. I just didn't want the OP to run out and buy a card that doesn't work.

According to the above link not only can the CX115 use the Sony Memory Stocks, but it can use the standard SDHC memory cards as well.

Just a heads up, newer Sony camcorders are able to use standard SDHC cards - not the Sony Proprietary Memory Stock/Pro.

EDIT: Did not see papakilo's post.
    Sorry about that.
