    Greetings ....

UPDATE -- Have found apparent cause of problems. See post #10 in this thread.

I have encountered a problem when using the OPERA Browser. The problem seems to occur when I save JPEG images to a folder, but not when saving other image types. This problem has been occuring less than a week now, and I am using Version 11.51.

If I right-click on a JPEG, then choose to save it, I get an error message "The application or DLL C:\Windows\Viewer.exe is not a valid windows image. Now when the error box is clicked out, I can still save the image.

Spent - make that blew - $ 30.00 on something that claimed to fix Viewer.exe issues - it didn't. Scans with AVAST and MalWare Bytes turned up nothing.

This problem occurs ONLY in Opera, but not in Firefox or MS-IE.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanx-A-Lot, Frank-0-Video

    Greetings ....

Tried Sophos Trial - it found something called "Mal/generic-L"

Next tried Norton 2012 trial - it removed one virus, a KeyGen thing inside a RAR file.

I still have the problem - I'm using Windows XP Home, 32-bit. Wonder if Viewer.exe itself has been somehow corrupted. If so, what should I do?

ALSO -- Found This Report on Opera Vulnerability
    http://www.h-online.com/security/news/item/Critical-vulnerability-in-Opera-web-browser-1175689.html

As a result of this, I am uninstalling Opera for now.

ALSO: NEW PROBLEM -- When I attempt to open any HTML files on my PC using MS-IE, the browser doesn't open it, instead it has Firefox (my default browser) open it. This happens only with local HTML files in MS_IE.

    Thanx-A-Lot, Frank

FWIW, it's quite probable that your PC was infected not through Opera itself

That Opera-related bug looks like just a "residual symptom" of the infection.

In last February, my PC was infected through Seamonkey, but the "residual symptom" appeared in Internet Exploder 8 ( it cannot open tabs anymore ).

viewer.exe is not a microsoft program and shouldn't be in the windows directory or on your computer at all. you are definitely still infected if it's still there and running.

    Greetings ....

VIEWER.EXE turns out to be an old Apple Quicktime component, but it's never given me trouble. It's something else, and it's occurred within the last 7-10 days.

Now using AVG anti-virus. It found nothing.

Tried Windows System Restore, but even though it was active, it can not restore my PC to a previous state. In fact, each time I try it tells me that "No changes were made to my computer".

    Yeah, Right.

Looks like I may need to re-install XP. I do have a disc but it has a different registration number. Fine. If I do the re-install, I'm sure that current files saved to my hard drive should not be affected. Do I also assume that I would have re-install any programs currently used now?

    Thanx-A-Lot, Frank

to get rid of virus/trojan problems you have to re-format the hard drive then re-install windows. all programs and any data stored on the boot drive will be gone.

    Greetings ...

    It's Viewer.exe (I mis-spelled) - and that file is OK.

I know now that the problem is -NOT- a virus/trojan/worm, but apparently a bad video card driver. I'm using an ATI Radeon HD 3300 graphics card, with an older driver, version 8.762.0.0 released August 3rd 2010. I had gone to the older driver because of lock-up issues with a newer one. That was back in late May when I first got my computer.

Less than seven days ago, I elected to change my display settings (still using older driver) from 1024x768 to 1280x720. It was after this that the trouble with Opera began.

I finally did a successful System Restore, which rolled me back to the 1024x768 screen. Next, I tested opening an HTML file in MS-IE. No problem, it went right to the file. However, when I changed screen display from 1024x768 to 1280x720, MS-IE messed up again, with HTML files opening in Firefox rather than in MS-IE. I have not yet re-installed Opera, but even if I do, I suspect I'll have the same troubles in it that I've already experienced.

Now I have to decide if I want to (1) delete/re-install the current driver, (2) risk going to a new driver or (3) take out the current graphics card (if I can) and try something else.

    Thanx-A-Lot, Frank-0-Video
