Can this play mkv files burned to dvd (data dvd) or just from usb? I have a wdtv live with a 2tb wd hdd but it does not have disc support, well not officially and dont want to mess it up with trying to get it to play, yes already looked into it. I would be interested in getting this as I also have a philips 5990 but ever since I bought the wdtv live I have not had to convert the mkv files i download to avi=divx/xvid to play on the 5990. I always back up everything to a dvd (data dvd) and would be great to get this for lets just say that my 2tb hdd happend to die, I could just watch everything I have mkv and avi, from the backed up dvds untill I bought another hdd. The 5990 wont be able to play the mkv files i have backed up on dvd and the wdtv live wont be able to play them as it doesnt support discs playback.

S-toon, I can't answer that question for ya', pard, as I don't burn any discs any longer. I too use a 2T drive and thumb-drives for vids and tunes. I'd give it a shot, but my burner is on the fritz, and has been for some time.
One thing I have noticed though: I tried playing some MKV and MP4 flics that worked just fine, if under 2gig, but when I tried larger files the player craps out somewhere near the 3/4 mark of the flic. I've no idea why. So, while it says plays MKV,MP4, blah, blah, blah . . . 'tain't necessarily so. I've got to do some looking around and do some research I guess.Cheers,

Ok cool, thanks for the quick reply. My usb dvd player/burner is also messing up, I need to buy another too. You should try to get another one to back up your stuff. It would suck if one day for whatever reason your 2tb hard drive just died. For example, I use to have a 1tb hdd and it died on me, was dropped one to many times, and well I had also stopped burning dvds just cus was lazy lol, that was a big mistake. I had some stuff that I did not burn and was lost when the hard drive died, that sucked big time!

I bought a second 2T for that very reason, and I also store stuff on a bud's server. Hell, I've had CDs/DVDs die as well. Can we ever truly be safe with our data?
Meant to say . . . almost everything on my 2T drive was transferred to it via existing discs. :>
One other thing I might add . . . a couple of cats who've reviewed this player seem to think it plays WMVs. As far as I can tell, it does no such thing.Last edited by Wanderlustus; 8th May 2012 at 13:49.
