I don't know if it is actually checking for infections. Instead, it is detecting patterns of searching that suggest a bot. I had this happen to me when I was trying to narrow the parameters of a search inquiry - five or more times in less than 2 minutes.

And I know that I am "virus" free.

Probably your answer is the "rightest" one. Actually, Google does NOT know what is *relevant for me* And since last week or so, I've been "encouraged" to refine my queries with the "allintext:" option

There's no such thing as a virus anymore.
It's all various forms of malware: trojan, worm, bootkit, rootkit, etc. Not a virus in sight.

The last time I saw a real virus was in the late 1990s, in the era of the Office macro virus.
Or email forwards with attached EXE files.
